Open letter to the food trucks

by Mary Anne » Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:59 am

Dear Food Truck,
I want to patronize you, really I do. But I think I need to share some helpful hints about my specific location. I work downtown in the Medical campus. Jewish/Nortons/Kosairs/University/Medical School/Dental School. There are lots of hungry people here but you guys haven’t quite figured out our kinks. I am here to help.
1. The magic corridor is Abraham Flexner Way. Please Google it. It’s a short street running from Jewish Hospital past the back of Kosair, past the Medical/Dental School to University Hospital. I have never spotted a food truck on this street. Close to it, but not close enough. The foot traffic is endless. Every doctor/med student/resident/admin/lab people hoofs it back and forth all day.
2. We eat early. Really. When you get to work at 6 or 7 you get hungry for lunch before noon. Tweeting or Facebooking that you are now setting up at noon is not going to work for a lot of the people down here. You need to get here early to get a parking space anyhow, may as well open early.
3. Please pick a day and try and stick to it. We plan for you guys to show up. One less day I have to eat a crappy reheated lunch is a blessing.
4. Flyers work. They don’t have to be color copies. Ask me, I’ll post some around campus. We have tons of bulletin boards. Announce your day, your general area and times and give your Facebook page and if you take plastic.
You are welcome. Now please come feed us.

Hey, thanks. I'll take care of it. I've been walking the med center area trying to discover where a good place would be to park. We're actually planning a multi-truck day for the Med Center. And you're right, I walked Chestnut and Floyd but did not venture onto A Flexner Way. Are there meters there?

You want lunch at say, 10 am? We have two trucks that are prepared to do breakfast. Is that an option?

Yes, there are meters on Abe Flex, some are dedicated handicapped, but there are some right at the corner of Floyd and Abe Flexner that would be in exactly the perfect spot. People will eat all freaking day long. Seriously. Sit at the corner and watch the white coats stream by. All in a hurry and hungry. Yes they will buy breakfast, and lunch. So excited about the multi food truck day, please, let me know when so I can put the word out in my building...and if there is a printable flyer I'll post them all over the med school... :D

Well since you're looking into it, how about a day ever couple of weeks at UofL campus? This may be a little more difficult due to the limited availability of street parking, but there's usually a handful of spots on S. Brook off of Warnock during the summer when campus is slow and many of the campus restaurants are closed down.

I've tried U of L and it was dreadful. Students don't buy 'cause we don't take Cardinal Cash. Is there a clutch of faculty/staff in a particular place? We also have to stay a certain distance from restaurants. If you've got a spot where there is a gathering of people, we'll come. Or if you can create a "food truck day" we'll come.

I've just about got the Medical Center days and trucks nailed down.

My hubby would love you guys to be on Abe Flexner as he works in the Childrens Hospital building and he also eats about 11 am, That would be so close for him and he would help spread the word there .

Oh, I hadn't even considered the Cardinal Cash issue. How far do you have to be from other eating establishments? Acting on the presumption that most of the trucks use local producers, perhaps http://louisville.edu/sustainability/events.html could be of some help? They have really made a big deal of trying to have more local/healthy food on campus, though I think it is still all somehow contracted with Sodexo (?) It seems like with a few announcements and a Facebook event page, it might work as a one-off deal.

Some of the Cardinal Towne businesses take Card Cash, others don't. They run them through like credit cards where they are accepted, and I know when Qdoba first opened they had a couple weeks where it wasn't working as the kinks were exercised.

I'd love to see the food trucks on campus...my only concern is that a lot of us only have a small window between classes so speedy options are essential.

Also, if parking was an issue, there's always the option to contact the parking office to see if permission can be given for areas normally barred to visitors (such as the circle near the school of business and the music school - lots of foot traffic through there).

I hope food trucks don't park on Abraham Flexner. As a courier who has to deliver packages there weekly, the on-street spots are already horrendously over-taxed with cars, there's very limited loading zones (which are sometimes occupied by parked cars, as opposed to delivery drivers), and there's always some goofus blocking the flow of traffic because they don't know where they're going. No thanks. Food trucks could park on Floyd nearby and be less of a nuisance, I'd think.
