Ehrler's brings the milk man back, with sustainable dairy

by Robin Garr » Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:16 pm

This could be very cool indeed, a local, sustainable option for natural and hormone-free milk delivered to your door by a family with a very long and honorable history in the local dairy business.

I'm old enough to remember the insulated silver box on the back steps. Our neighbor was a milk man at some point. So, will it work the same way? Back then, all mothers, except the one nurse on our street, were at home most of the day - one car back then too:-) Someone was there to bring the milk in soon after it was delivered.
I remember someone walking down the street with a cart, selling produce.
Pony ride.
It's nice that we are in a time that we can revisit so many things.

Very Cool!
Robin- did you note the other vendors being included too?
Our Farmers and Food Artisans

Blue Dog Bakery, Louisville
Climax Mountain Spring Water, Orlando
JD Country Milk, Russellville
Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese, Austin
Nancy’s Bagels, Louisville
Red Hot Roasters Coffee, Louisville
Ridge Acres Farm, Union Star
Rooibee Red Tea, Louisville
Spring Valley Farms, Holland
Windy Acres Farm, Scottsville

For those of us not on/near Frankfort Avenue, having Blue Dog bread and Kenny's cheeses delivered would be wonderful- and well worth the $3 delivery charge.

Ellen, if you'll click through to the linked site and then poke around, they give answers to a lot of those questions. They do leave food in an insulated box if you're not home, and use Email to cut off delivery if you're going to be away. And the give you a silver box! 8)

I did notice them, Deb, and Ridge Acres eggs and other good things. Mostly, though, I was intrigued to see artisanal dairy products, because it's been my understanding that regulations imposed over the years under Big Dairy's lobbying influence make it painfully difficult for small dairy farmers to bypass the distribution system that mixes their milk in with all the non-humane, rBGH goodies before it's packaged.

We've been using JD milk, cream, etc for a few years - they have it at Whole Foods, Bergers, and I saw it the other day at the Fox Hollow Farm Store. It's super quality stuff. The delivery option is intriging none the less.

Mark,

Is there a noticable difference with the cream ( in cooking)? We've had the milk (excellent), but never the cream.

Does anyone know how much this cost? We drink about 1.5 gallons a week which I'm currently paying about 8-10 bucks a week for at Kroger.

Also is this the consistency of like whole milk or even thicker? I have only had factory farm milk, sadly. :(

Jason, this link (if it works with all the code at the end) will give you their milk price page. It looks like $3.75 for a half-gallon, which works out to $10.75 for 1.5 gallons, so you won't save money, but you'll be paying a very small premium for quality.

The cream is noticeably richer that the routine carton variety - there is usually a thick plug of solid cream at the top. I love it in sauces, etc.

We only buy the whole milk as my 17 y/o is a competative runner and calories aren't an issue for him - I don't drink milk as a rule but they offer 2% and skim as well. The whole milk is noticeably richer that the routine homogonized version.

Oh somehow I missed that link, thanks! I didn't realize you could get skim, 2% or whole, I think I will definitely be doing this. Only a $5 premium per week and I"m sure its much better stuff than the "organic" I'm buying now.

Jason, do poke around the site, including the FAQ page - there are some other fees including a $2.99 celivery charge and a refundable box deposit. I think it would still be worth it, but you want to avoid any surprises.

Jason,

I can vouch for the milk- it's noticably better tasting to me than the organic milk we drink now. :D Love that you can order weekly, bi-weekly or monthly too. I can see us doing milk, bread, cheese with occasional Roobios teas. ( we get our eggs from the farmer's market so not a keen interest there).

Jason,

How do you know? I sent them an email to inquire, but haven't heard back yet.
