New Roots ... Have you heard of it?

by Kelly Lehman » Wed Jun 06, 2012 10:57 am

New Roots is a wonderful Non-Profit organization that puts together produce shares in Old Louisville and the Shawnee neighborhoods of Louisville. It provides those communities access to fresh locally grown produce in areas that are under-served. Twice a month shares are delivered to these areas with boxes brimming full, and all for a sliding scale based on economic need.

With the economy the way it is, more and more people are finding themselves not only utilizing social services and outreach programs like this but really needing and depending on them.

I am very proud to be associated with New Roots and will be doing a Chef Demo at the Shawnee Distribution: Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3640 River Park Drive this Thursday from 4:30-6:30.

These shares are available to all interested, so check it out!

Very cool! ( and as Gary stated, much needed). I'm on the board of the Food Literacy Project ( www.foodliteracyproject.org) which serves some of the same population. I'm forwarding the organization's info to my Executive Director and Board- could be some synergies for the two organizations.

Thanks,
Deb

Interesting. I live in Old Louisville and have never heard of this. Is it only for low income folks?

Absolutely not! Shares are available to anyone interested. Order forms can be downloaded on their website, http://www.newrootsproduce.org . Shares include both Veg and Fruit depending on what's in season. The share I'm demoing from today contains: Carrots, Spring onions, Garlic Scapes, Kale, Chard, Snow Peas, Peaches and a few things I can't remember. And Shares are delivered twice monthly. Check it out.

Whoops! My fingers are so used to typing .com, they just fly that way.

The Demo was a wonderful success! There will be another one in two I weeks I believe. I've never seen food go so fast:

Ginger Carrot Soup with crema & Sauteed Garlic Scapes
Braised Greens with Balsamic on Corn Cake
Skillet Grilled Peach Salad with Basil, Lemon Cucumbers & Honey Vinaigrette

Couldn't put it out fast enough. Had a great time. Never been hugged so much for my food!
