St. Charles Exchange opened in April in a formerly vacant 3800 sq. ft. space in one of the oldest buildings in the West Main Street corridor at 113 S. 7th Street. Embracing the history of the building, St. Charles Exchange has created a casually elegant environment reminiscent of a 1900's hotel lobby bar. The menu features innovative seasonal variations of food classics from the turn of the century and the world-class beverage program celebrates American estate grown wines and craft beers, while focusing on a lengthy cocktail list that showcases the art of a fine mixed drink.

St. Charles Exchange is a sister establishment of The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Co., Lemon Hill, and Supper, all located in Philadelphia, PA. A group of local investors partnered with the Philadelphia-based management team to bring the concept to Louisville in 2012.The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Co. has received several notable media honors including Best Bars in America in 2011 from Esquire, 25 Best Cocktail Bars in America from GQ,Top 10 Best New Cocktail Bars from Bon Appetít, and 50 Best Bars in America from Food & Wine. The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. was also nominated for a James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program in 2012.

We went yesterday for lunch - what a great new addition. The restaurant and bar area look great, especially the bar itself. It's a different feel from anything else around town, and in a very good way. Our waiter also gave us a sneak peak of the below-street-level patio that will open July 1. It's surrounded almost all the way around by buildings, but gets a lot of natural light and a tree or two. They're planning to put a second bar outside on the patio, and will have seating for 65. In my opinion, it will be one of the best outdoor spaces downtown, with Theatre Square really being the only rival I can think of.

Our table tried the Salmon Club, BBQ Duck Biscuits, and St. Chuck Burger, along with some lamb fat fries. All were excellent, with the salmon club and it's salmon "bacon" being the standout for me.

Service was friendly, attentive, and informative. Everyone working seemed genuinely excited about the place. It was a business lunch, so no drinks were had, but the cocktail menu is solid and I'm looking forward to trying out a few. I also noticed a lengthy, and fairly priced, bourbon list.

We were there from around 12:30 to 1:30. A group of three guys in suits sitting at a table close to the bar.

We were there from around 12 to 1, but were on the banquette on the other side. I kind of wish we could have seen the bar better. It looked amazing. And definitely MUST go back after the sun is over the yardarm. It was really hard to sip iced tea and coffee with all those adult libations beckoning!

Kim, they're creatively fashioned in that you get five (halves), each with different flavoring elements in the filling - truffle, for instance; almond, pimento, bagna cauda and ... um, something else. All garnished with appropriate herbs or crunchies; some of the whites simmered in colors so one's lavender, another bright yellow; all served on a bed of fresh herbs. Basically, they're creative, stunning to the eye, and tasty.
