Please rate Tumbleweeds River for large teen group

by Joan J » Fri Jun 01, 2012 8:22 pm

Calling on experts-- this is so not my area of expertise. Group of 10, ages 10-14 need a dinner venue during a diving meet next Sat night. I've been asked for an "expert" recommendation by an out of town team. How about Tumbleweed's on the River?
So let's rate the food. If Guacamole is a 10, El Mundo an 8, where would Tumbleweed score?
Ambiance?
Ability to deal with 10 teen agers plus parents?

Thanks!

4. But teens who aren't gourmets probably won't mind.

Ambiance?

Unless they have improved (and by improved, I mean thrown out the old and introduced a new) their ordering system and server menu, then service will be questionable at best. The last two times we tried to go the service was so bad, we nearly left.
But Robin is right, they are built around serving groups of people so they can probably accommodate you just fine. But with a group that big, if the POS system is the same as it was a few years ago, then you might want to keep the ordering simple, if you want everyone to get what they ordered. To be fair, it is NOT the servers' fault, it is the interface that is the problem.

The food is edible, but not terribly tasty or impressive. I agree with Robin's 4.

As for ambiance, I am not aware of any, so your meal won't be interrupted by it. There is a nice view of the river.

Depending on where the event is and what time they want to eat dinner Captains Quarters might be another interesting option!

Thank-you! I think I won't, recommend, that is. So next question: What local (multiple venue local chains are fine) restaurant would you recommend for a group of teens and parents from Pittsburgh?

They are down by U of L natatorium, so I was thinking that downtown would be fun and not too far. Trying to keep them off the Hurstbourne strip or 4th street live to show off some local fun neighborhoods.

Maybe Papalino's in the new Cardinal Towne? Great pizza, a good-size room, and it will give them a peek at the U of L Campus, and there are about a dozen eateries all in a row along that block of Cardinal Boulevard on the northwest corner of the campus. If they don't want pizza, they can go to Home Run Burgers, and then end up at Comfy Cow for dessert!

I was there with a group of about 12 last month, and at 5pm on a Tuesday, with half the tables in the restaurant empty, we had to wait an hour for our food. Which had evidently been sitting under a heat lamp for 20-30 minutes. After the servers tried to bring other parties' food to us. Three times.

There is also Cluckers in the fray, which does a decent wing (IMO). We took our 5 and 7 year olds in there last Sunday before going to Churchill Downs and they loved it.
