Consumption of Meat

by Mark Head » Tue May 29, 2012 2:42 pm

My favorite food blog has a thoughtful and well written piece on eatting meat. I thought it might be an interesting read for others here.

Good post. Ruhlman is a hell of a writer, and a good thinker as well. I wouldn't really argue with his conclusions, but if I wanted to get into the ethics of food, I'd be more concerned about Big Agra and industrial processing of meat and poultry - to some extent, veggies, too - rather than inquiring too closely into each individual's decisions about what to eat.

Check out the lady on the LEFT...THIS is what happens to you if you don't eat enough BBQ. The lady on the right ? Obviously she eats her BBQ...apparently every day.

OMG Steve you are funny! You have to hand it to Nigella. She looks wonderful. How old is Paula Dean?
I think she looks better than that woman.

Always somebody trying to confuse us with facts. Please note that I prefer making up my own facts.

I don't know about that pescatarian business. I recommend liberal amounts of bourbon, coffee, and very, very dark chocolate to maintain youthful vim and vigor! Oh, and red wine!

I agree with Robin. I would be less concerned about what I eat and more concerned about where it comes from.

Not to alarm anyone, but I found out why all orange juice is pasteurized the other day: lizards. It seems that there is no effective way to prevent lizards from getting caught in the machinery that large OJ producers (in Florida mainly) use to process their orange juice. Inevitably, some aspect of the lizards ends up in the juice and the pasteurization process is used to sterilize any foreign lizard material that may be present. There is literally an FDA minimum requirement for the amount of lizard that can be in Orange Juice (albeit a very small amount), and it MUST be pasteurized in the event of lizard contamination.

Oh the things we learn as we grow in the world of large scale food production.

That reminds me of when i found out about the allowable amounts of rodent filth and insect parts in peanut butter.

Insect Filth: average 30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams
rodent filth: average 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams
