News I hate to share: L&N Wine Bar is closing

by Robin Garr » Wed May 09, 2012 1:19 pm

I'm really and truly bummed about this. Len Stevens just called to let me know that he and Nancy have decided to "hang it up" at the end of the month, a business decision precipitated by the end of their lease and liquor license renewal hitting at the same time.

L&N has long been one of my favorites, both as a foodie and a wine geek. Its 54-unit Cruvinet wine machine and 100 bottle by-the-glass list; Len's wine knowledge informing an outstanding wine program with the possibility of buying by the taste as well as the glass or bottle; and always excellent American bistro fare to match, in one of the city's most comfortable restaurant venues ... it will all be missed.

Like the class act they are, Len and Nancy decided not to withold the news from their staff but to allow them plenty of notice, and encouraged them to seek jobs; they'll stay open through the end of May if they can, to allow friends and fans to drop in for one more meal, but with all staff encouraged to seek and take new positions, that could change.

Len said he'd send an Email with more details, but I don't have it yet. I'll post when I receive it.

Meanwhile, though, I didn't want to wait to let folks know this sad news. All the best to Len and Nancy and their staff as they seek new positions in the business. Everyone who works there is quality, and I wish them well in their next ventures.

I really hate to hear this. They are a class act and add so much to the Louisville dining experience.

I wonder if that area of town is becoming saturated with similar dining options?

Here's the letter from Len and Nancy:

It is with a sense of sadness that Nancy and I announce that L&N Wine Bar and Bistro will be closing June 2, 2012. We would like to thank everyone who have supported us over the nearly nine years we have been open and hope that you will come out to see us one final time before we close our doors. Unfortunately, there are too many people to mention individually who have contributed to any success we may have achieved , but we would be remiss if we did not mention the amazing staff we have had the privilege to work with over the years. We count you first among our many blessings during this time. It has been a wonderful run, one that we will always treasure. Once again, thank you so very much.

Heartbreaking. They were so packed when we went by Derby weekend, and I thought to myself how proud I was to be living so close to such a great establishment and what a top shelf experience they provide.

Sucks. They just got rave reviews from a gluten free blogger who was in town for the Derby. I added it to my safe restaurant list but now I guess I better get in there quick.

We had a wonderful meal at L&N last night. We wanted to get in one last time. They must be running a little short on staff b/c both Nancy and Len were acting as food runners. It didn't matter, the meal was excellent. I had the L&N "fish & chips" and hub had the Steak Frites. Beautiful salads and the cheese plate. We will really miss them.

On a side note, Majid and his wife were there. He said they had come to pay their respects one last time as well. Now that's class.

I've been meaning to mention it, but we had a fantastic dinner there on Saturday as our final L&N meal. Everything was outstanding, and the place was packed. You'd never know they're a week from closing.

On a related note, I really hope something good goes into that spot after L&N closes the doors. It's a great location.
