Mail Order Seafood

I'm looking to get some red drum fish and alas, no luck @ Seafood Connection or Highland Fish Market. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reputable online outfit that ships good fresh seafood?

The reason you can't find any is because the fish you are looking for is (was) known commercially as the "Redfish"...Redfish stocks began plummeting in the late 80's as a result of the "Blackened Redfish" craze and continued to spiral downward until the late 90's when they were placed on (some type of) endangered list. Today they are among the most protected of our coastal species and it is my understanding that commercial fishing is (either) forbidden or extremely limited. Most states (and this may in fact be federal law) even limit sport-fishermen to only one fish per day and that fish must fall into a "slot" between 18 and 27 inches long.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Daddio, That does help. I didn't know that there are/were endangered. All I knew was that a friend in NOLA made one for me recently and I loved it.

However, I'd still like to find a reputable online shipper of seafood as I even checked the aforementioned local sources for Black Drum Fish as an alternative (close cousin of the Redfish and K-Paul's has served it blackened) , but not endangered per Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch.http://www.montereybayaquarium.org//cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_factsheet.aspx?fid=337

Ray, I should think you'd be able to find it online as Redfish somewhere now. Bluefin carries it in town as far as wholesale distribution goes. We had it on our menu for a while, and I know Seviche had it on theirs when I was there last week. Redfish is now being farmed, as apparently they figured out a way to simulate its natural habitat, the brackish waters of the Gulf Coast, in a farm environment.

Hmmmm....interesting. I recently saw Redfish on a menu as well and just assumed it was another in a long list of examples of a restaurant taking liberties to re-name their fish. (Wild caught Norwegian King Salmon anyone ?) But hey, here it is...farm raised Redfish. What will they think of next ?

We were skeptical when Bluefin first brought it to us as well. After some tastings and tweakings we had a great dish. We soon began to run into supply issues however, as often happens when products are introduced to, or come back onto the market like this. We regretfully dropped the dish altogether, but it was a great seller when we had it (about a year on the menu).
