Apocalypse Brew Works officially opens Friday

by Rich S » Mon May 07, 2012 10:25 pm

According to the Apocalypse Facebook page, they officially open at 5 p.m. Friday, May 11. They had a soft opening the weekend before Derby. I wasn't able to go, but apparently it was successful enough that they ran out of a lot of their beers. I'm really looking forward to checking out what they have on tap.

I was up there friday night of their soft open. It was a great crowd, and we went through half of what they had on tap. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and the food truck ran out of bbq from what I gather.

I drove by there this morning--pretty strange location tucked between a few non-descript buildings. If I were not looking for it I wouldn't have noticed it.

I've also noticed that and there certainly doesn't appear to be much parking. Since they've painted the building Red, at least it's visible.

Both times I've gone down I just ended up parking on the street under the overpass and walked half a block down. Talking to Paul about it tonight the parking situation is something they're going to be working on over time.

Great beer and great service. The Black Pepper Ale is a must try.

The place was packed at 7:00 on Fri. night, between 150-200 people in attendance. There was a constant line for beer, 8-10 people deep, for the hour we were there, but there were three people working the taps so the line went fast. The indoor customer section of the building is very small, maybe 150 sq feet. There are 4-5 seats at the bar and two small tables that seat 3-4. The outdoor area (parking lot) is quite large and included a food truck, live music, and numerous picnic tables. The weather was perfect for an evening outdoors, but we wondered what the plan is for days with not so nice weather.

There is no on premise parking, so street parking is a must. Hours are Fri. and Sat. from 5-11.

Black pepper has been used in beer for a long time, primarily in Belgian beers.

Locally, BBC's Hell For Certain (even going back to the original prototypes in the mid-90's) contains black pepper. NABC's new Black & Blue Grass (and its predecessor, Black Grass Saison), contains Penzey's Tellicherry Black Pepper, Lemon Grass and Blue Agave Nectar.

I have not tasted the Apocalypse version, but knowing those folks, it will be good.

It's definitely peppery. All I could think while I was drinking it was that I wanted a steak or some eggs or a potato to go with it, something that would do well with some pepper on it.
