Who's celebrating? Where can you get a really good grilled cheese in this town?

Gee, Robin, I thought today, April 12, was National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.

On the whole, I think a grilled cheese (Or as my younger son used to say a "girled cheese") sandwich is best made at home. BUT when I choose to order one out I prefer the one made at the Alley Cat in Middletown: provolone, Swiss & cheddar cheeses served on asiago bread.

This holiday is celebrated on a frequent basis in our house. My husband, however, calls them "toasted cheese sandwiches." Does anyone else call them that? Is it a Pacific Northwest thing?

I like the grilled cheese at Zbar. I get it with tomatoes, and I add bacon when I'm feeling extra piggy.

I think it's kind of British. Is he an Anglophile?

Actually, I think of "grilled" cheese as cooked in butter on a grill or skillet, and "toasted" cheese as a somewhat healthier concoction heated in the oven (or toaster oven) until the bread is toast and the cheese hot and melty. I actually prefer that; a few less calories and not as greasy. I don't know if that's an official definition or just my intuitive use, though.

Well, he's married to a half-British lady, so I guess that makes him an Anglophile by default.

I agree with your definitions of "toasted" and "grilled." He persists in calling it a "toasted cheese sandwich," though, and no manner of harassment from me has been able to break him of it. I've decided to enjoy it as one of his quirks. Marriage is grand.

Cheese on toast is what we do in England. Toast one side of bread under broil in over. Turn over, put grated cheese on it, put back under grill. Then of course you can get really fancy and do Welsh Rarebit which mixes the cheese with either milk or ale, colemans mustard powder optional. Absolutely yummy.

Agreed. Divine. I adore the mustard with it. I keep that version in a separate category from grilled cheese sandwiches.

I grew up in the Midwest, IL. We had "toasted cheese" Butter/Margarine in the pan, butter both slices of bread and fill it with American cheese, Kraft slices. Pan fry until golden brown.

Married a fella with an Italian mom. "Cheese under the broiler" Bread on the broiler pan, lots of sliced Brick cheese, melt until gooey deliciousness ensues.............

Now I want one. Both. Either!

No more calls - we have a winner. This is what he is referring to, in its purest form.

Unless you count using Velvita cheese. ( Can you call it cheese?) that made for one really gooey sandwiches.
