Festive/Fun Places

by Robin F. » Thu Apr 12, 2012 7:30 am

Hey all - we have friends coming in town Saturday and they want to "go some place festive/fun". I'll pass on making my snarky comments about all the places we've taken them before that apparently don't count - so I'm coming to the experts.

Some place(s) festive/fun. They are coming in town Saturday at 5:30 so we'll most likely get to this festive place by 6:00. They'll go home that night so we'll probably we done having fun by 9:00. They aren't big foodies, but we are.

Suggestions? Thanks!

The Melting Pot, Buca di Beppo, Japanese (teppanyaki table)....those are some fun places that we go to with our kids and friends when we are in the fun and festive mood.. Also Hiko-a-man in Westport Plaza has a private room with a low table where you sit down onto the floor...

I think Silver Dollar is festive and fun! If you go, ask for Seth - he is a great server!

I think Mojitos is a lot of fun, but I'm not sure what their calling "festive and fun".

Do they want a show? Maybe take them to a hibachi grill, lol.

I agree with others that "festive and fun" is kind of hard to describe, but one option, since it's a Saturday night in Spring, might be to pick almost any favorite on Bardstown, Frankfort Avenue or Nulu, and enjoy a stroll through these neighborhoods before or after dinner. Nulu seems to be particularly hopping these days, and we were deeply smitten by Decca the other night, but Harvest, Wiltshire or Garage Bar will also draw me in on any given night. With its expansive outdoor dining areas and still having that attractive new-restaurant smell,Decca might be a particularly good pick.

The contradictions are "festive/fun" and starting to eat by 6!

I'd either try the Buca option above for dinner, or the cooking tables at Sapporo on Bardstown Rd. Both tend to fill-up early, and provide "fun" atmospheres.

Then, I'd go to lower Frankfort and do an ice cream dessert tasting, walking from Comfy Cow to the Pie Kitchen across the street from each other.

Finally, I'd hit Volare for a nightcap (as by now the bar will be filled with live music going on)

I couldn't agree more. They are from Lawrenceburg and frequently go to Lexington, so I don't think they realize any type of music here won't start until 9:00 or so on a Saturday night. They've mentioned going to Drake's before in Lex, so I'm guessing that is the type of atmosphere they have in mind.

Garage and Silver Dollar are definitely on the list. Any other pub type suggestions? (I like the walking around Nulu idea too.)

The bar a Majid's with Stephen D putting on a show can be pretty fun.

Agreed. I think Bobby J is the music this evening, but I can't remember for certain.

Good idea. Or, perhaps...

While I totally agree from 9 to midnight or so, I disagree from 6-9 . . . Stephen is great, but even he can't summon up a crowd and "fun" atmosphere by himself

Downtown the Blue Man Group will be on. For a LOT of fun you may want to hit an early dinner and go to the show (it isn't all that long), but if not Patrick O'Shea's and Doc Crow's may be filled around 6 with theater-goers. Then, you can walk around and hit other near-by bars, or even get to 4th St Live which - if the weather is good - will be jumping starting a tad earlier than other places.

The first thing that came to mind for me is Rocky's sub pub on the river in Jeffersonville. Probably because I'll be there with my family on Saturday to celebrate two neices and a nephew's birthday (but don't worry, we'll be wrapping it up by 6ish). The forecast looks beauuuutiful so far, so the idea of hanging out along the river with the Louisville Skyline across the Ohio Sea sounds very fun and festive! I know they have live music sometimes because I get notifications from an ex-boyfriend of mine frequently about playing accoustic cover tunes on the patio, which is probably cheesy by most LHB forumites standards, but based on the descriptions of your guests it might be EXACTLY what they had in mind. I really like the food at Rocky's, too - a little something for everyone and it's locally owned! And they have beer tablets which I can't wait to try ;-).
