Exceptional salad bars ... where?

by Robin Garr » Tue Apr 10, 2012 4:39 pm

I know, salad bars are sooo '70s, but to be honest, I was at Whole Foods at lunch time the other day and got in the mood.

So I loaded a box from theirs - not the lunch bar, the salad bar - and was pretty impressed, particularly with the sad that includes a lot of made salads involving lentils, pasta, couscous, quinoa, etc.

That got me to thinking where else might have exceptional examples. I went to Jason's (yes, I know, a chain), because I've heard their salad bar is a good one, and indeed, it was impressive, although without it fell short of all the extras at Whole Wallet, er, Foods.

I'm probably bored with the idea now, but just out of curiosity, do any of you know of other salad bars that are over the top, or at least deserve to be rated as "outstanding"?

Fifth Quarter has a rocking salad bar.

What, they closed?

Jason's is our go to salad bar. Not a ton of extras, but am impressed with the herbed feta cheese, roasted red pepper hummus, kalamata olives and decent balsamic vinegrete.

I think you guys have about named the total extent of them in town! I do agree with David that our go to is Jason's for convenience if nothing else.

They use organic and natural foods when they can. They are a good chain in that respect.

We need a Sweet Tomatoes in Louisville! http://www.souplantation.com/

The only other place, besides the few mentioned, that I can think of is the salad and crepes place on N. Hurstbourne- is it still there?- Simply Splendid Salads http://sssalads.com/

And the Kroger salad bar...

PS- I prefer the Jason's on N. Hurstbourne to the one in Shelbyville Road Plaza. Tastier food, bigger sandwiches, better service!

Don't ever apologize for an affinity for a good salad bar. I love this thread. The Bardstown/Grinstead Wendy's had the SuperBar back in the 80s, and it started my love for bars of all sorts. Salad, and beyond. :D

I eat from salad bars multiple times a week (wish I could just pull up a stool). I love the ones you've mentioned, but my self control is weak and I always feel physically better if I go to Rainbow Blossom. I go to Valu Mkt for the salad bar ALOT but just because it's close to home and it's always extremely fresh. But Rainbow Blossom is the best! It's little but so healthy and tasty - and all organic! I tried to get a salad from the Stoney Brook location yesterday, though, because that area is a healthy eating desert and found that they don't have a salad bar there :(. The location off of Bardstown near Sullivan is my favorite and they have a Mediterranean bar that's all under the same hood. Excellent soups everyday, too, and they're half the price of Valu Mkt's. Pretty sure the price per salad pound is the same as Whole Food.

Personally, I feel trying to find an "exceptional" salad bar is like trying to find an Asian buffet that doesn't totally suck. Although not a great salad bar, Jumbo Buffet in Stoney Brook has some pretty decent chopstick style offerings for a buffet. However, occasonaly I'll get lazy and I do like a good salad. I'd be interested in finding the good things without any of the effort of cutting it up myself.... Besides Kroger....And that's not good.......

Not a salad bar but I'm curious whether the "chop salad" place is still open on Market, near Fifth. My office is moving to that area and I'm wondering where I can find a really good salad.

I'm assuming there are no actual salad bars in that vicinity.

It's still open, everyone from our office enjoys it. There is a salad bar at Cravings (basement of Nat City Tower, 5th and Main). It doesn't have as much variety and the produce sometimes does not appear to be the freshest. I still get it on occassion and just leave out that particular vegetable for the day.

Not local, but the last REALLY good salad bar I've seen was the one at Fogo de Chao in Indianapolis. Of course I didn't partake much of it because I was saving room for the meat parade.

Is this another one of those April Fool threads? First Antonia blames her addiction to bars on the salad bar at Wendy's in the 80's and then DanT tries to convice us he even noticed a salad bar when he went to Fogo de Meat Mecca!

I'm not buying it!

Thanks, Sara. I'd forgotten about Cravings. Hadn't been down there in years.
