Wegman's - Best Supermarket in America

You see Kroger and even Whole Foods trying to Wegmanize, but they just don't get it right. Danny should open a Supermarket University to teach the rest of the country. Or expand.

Rochester has never been a union town. That hurts in some ways, but what two employers did and have done is create an enlightened alternative. Kodak did and Wegman's does treat employees well. Wegman's benefited many of my students - got them through college, gave them careers. Wegman's has not helped the city of Rochester as much as it has the suburbs, but it has done some good. And, oddly, it has given the area its chief tourist attraction. It is no doubt hard for folks outside Monroe County to believe that a supermarket is the dominant force in an area's consciousness.

Wegman's as the Anti-Walmart. This is what a company with a conscience can look like.

I grew up in Rochester and even worked for Kodak for while and can truly say the only thing I really miss about Rochester is Wegman's! Unlike many stores that only people from outside of the area like Wegman's is also truly adored by all of the locals.

It's hard to say what you actually like about the store because there are so many things. I guess the one thing that is probably the biggest highlight is the employees and their attitudes! It certainly demonstrates that they must be well treated by the company. Unfortunately there growth is very slow and it will be a long time before we see what here.

I would suggest that if they embraced an expansion-chain policy, they wouldn't be the same organization and that the new ideology would be reflected in the demise of much that inspires their quality.

I've had limited exposure to the Wegman's in Binghamton and Ithaca, and I thought they were very nice, although I'm not sure I got to know them well enough to fall in love.

My most recent experience with one of their stores was in Northern Virginia near Dulles Airport. It certainly had the same feel that the ones I was familiar with in Rochester had. The employees seemed to have the same positive attitudes also! Obviously they have found a way to transfer the corporate philosophy's as they grow.

I'll be moving to Syracuse in July.

On my visit there in February, Wegman's was presented as one of the major selling points. Alas, I did not have time to visit one. It's one the list of things to do when I visit there in May.

LOVE Wegman's! We always visit when we go to my in-laws in NJ. They have the best selection of allergen free products for someone like me who is allergic to everything! It's also always so clean. The only problem I have with the one near my in-laws is that it is HUGE, like Costco huge. So it can be difficult to find stuff sometimes. Are they all this big?

Not in Rochester, though they seem to want to go big no matter where they are. There is one Wegman's inside the city limits (the one complaint about Wegman's is that it -along with every other power in Monroe Co. - has abandoned the core city - there is no metro government, and the core is all too predominantly poor, with a few bright spots. Downtown Rochester has been Detroited, in large part. No one in the burbs gives a whack about the city). The lone city Wegman's is in a kind of Highlands area, on the border of a St. Matthews-type suburb. That one is doubling its size in the next year. So that's the long answer. Not all Costco- huge, but aspiring to that. You don't go to Weggie's for a quart of milk and some eggs. It's interesting to note that there is a Trader Joe's opening in the same shopping center where the flagship Wegman's is. People will go there to avoid an all-day shopping jag.

My son lives in Baltimore and goes to Weg's often, though it's a bit far. I'll ask him how big that one is.

On the other hand, I lived in New Jersey for four years within walking distance of a Pathmark. It earned its number 1 ranking as the worst. After four years there I still couldn't find things in the store because they organized by vendor, not by item. I remember seeing something after two years there and asking the store manager why it wasn't with the other things like it (it may have been a brand of tea). The answer: it's with all the items that particular distributor sells to us. Complaining about Pathmark was one of the community building activities.

Don't forget White HOTS!

I do miss having the white hot option, but as for Garbage Plates, well... In 35 years in Rochester,I never had a Garbage Plate. Home from college, my sons would run to Nick Tahou's in the middle of the night to get Garbage Plates, and, inexpicably, come home with another one. The smell could get through the refrigerator and wake me up! I have seen things sloshing around in Dumpsters that looked more edible.
