Fish Fries

by Ken B » Mon Apr 02, 2012 3:19 pm

With only a couple fridays left to go in Lent (two right? - sorry not a Catholic. . .) are there any fish fries that are especially special (not like, "This is my favorite because of nostalgia" but rather, "This one actually uses fresh oil and decent fish"), or are they all basically kinda the same and I should just choose one close to where I live?

Actually, it's over for this year at the Episcopal churches that have fries (St. Luke's, St. Mark's), and I assume for the RC churches, too. Easter is this coming Sunday, and fish fries pretty much wrapped up last week.

Next year, though, check out St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Anchorage, just a block or two south and east of Village Anchor and Anchorage Cafe. Cooked by volunteers, great fried cod or your choice of grilled tilapia ...

You might be too late.

Easter is Sunday. Friday is Good Friday. As as day of solemn reflection, many (most?) parishes don't hold a fish fry on Good Friday. I have heard of a few who do carry out only, but I could not name them.

I grew up in the St. Athanasius parish. They did not hold a Good Friday fish fry. Maybe things have changed in the last 15 years.

St Andrews United Church of Christ on Browns Lane has their fish fries on Wednesdays during Lent. I'm not sure about the quality but I'm going this week to check it out.

There's always a fish fry schedule on the Archdiocese's website. Here's this year's:

We are members of St Bernard parish and our fish fries are done for the year.

At our fish fries, we have fried fish, shrimp, and rolled oysters ... all of which are good, as are the onion rings.

We have a seperate carryout stand and you can order online. If you want to dine in the hall, expect a 45-60 minute wait minimum to get through the line. We went 3 weeks ago. They opened the doors at 4:30 and started serving at 5:00. By the time we got there at 5:20, the line was wrapped 3/4 of the perimeter of the gym.

Yuck! That is the stuff that hasn't made the successful transition to vinegar yet.

I should probably add, though, that the guys at St. Luke's made the decision to go with Two Buck Chuck this year, based on a bang-for-the-buck analysis. The dining public seemed to approve.
