Comfy Cow to serve Derby Ice Cream®

Derby Ice Cream®

From Tim Koons-McGee:

The Comfy Cow is over the moooooooooooooon about receiving Registered Trademark designation for their very own Derby Ice Cream®. The only official Derby Ice Cream® in America is fittingly produced right here in Louisville, KY by one of our own home grown businesses. The chefs at The Comfy Cow have combined their famous Georgia Butter Pecan based fresh dairy mix, Brown Forman’s Old Forester bourbon , chunks of their delicious homemade pecan pie, world renowned Barry Callebaut chocolate chips, more Georgia pecans and an extra splash or two of Old Forester, just for good measure. A new tradition just in time for everyone’s Derby parties.

I assume the announcement is legit, though. It did come straight from Tim.

Seems to be an awful lot of Georgia in that there Derby Ice Cream®

Good thing they got it trademarked...

Love their Ice Cream, not so into them trademarking ubiquitous concepts.

It has seemed to only create poor feelings between a certain lawsuit happy pie company and a lot of restaurants.

I hope that certain pie company doesn't see this, as that ice cream recipe sure sounds a lot like that pie recipe.

I don't know this, Ryan, but my guess is that the guys are making fun of you-know-who. And since they aren't trying to use the registered term "Pie" they're in the clear.

"Real" (ahem) Derby pie is made with walnuts, not pecans - at least according to Kern's. I prefer pecans myself and am already salivating at the thought of this new flavor from Comfy Cow. If the execution is half as good as the description, it'll be fantastic.

ditto on the walnuts. And Woodford Reserve is the Official bourbon of the KY Derby, so it would seem proper to use that. Oh well, they can create their own version with whatever products they choose.

The only reason Woodford is the official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby is because they paid the most for that right.

Ryan,
I'm sure Comfy Cow will do a great job, but it can't beat your trio variant on the theme last year- it was phenomenal.

Just FYI, Churchill Downs requires anything using the Derby brand (Derby Pie, Derby Ice Cream, Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby) to associate itself with the Kentucky Derby to be trademarked and licenses, and they get paid by those who use it. Thus the aggressive nature with which that name and association is protected.

Brown Foreman holds the right to name the "Official Bourbon". Used to be Old Forester and now they use it to promote Woodford Reserve (because they make a lot more off Woodford) but you can use any of their bourbons in making official Derby products. I think they still use Old Forester in making the cheapo Mint Juleps they sell at the track. (FYI, Woodford Reserve is actually "select" barrels of Old Forester blended with the pot stilled bourbon they make in Woodford County. Those stills can't make enough to meet demand).

So don't slam a local business for teaming with a local icon to promote a local event and a local product all of which are unquestionably high quality. Also, Churchill Downs has every right to protect their brand, as do the companies who pay big money to use it.

Pay up or shut up.

BTW, Derby Ice Cream is ****ing TASTY. Go get some. Just sayin...

I think the use Early Times for the cheap juleps. Old Forester is too good for those. And Early Times in not even a true bourbon.

I went on Friday and they were all out! <sniff, sniff>

I sampled the Mint Julep, but then I quickly remembered something: Mint Juleps are gross. I reverted to my old friend, Bourbon Ball.
