Visit Question

by Aaron M. Renn » Thu Mar 22, 2012 10:05 am

I'm going to be back in Louisville for the first time in a while shortly. I'm totally out of what's happening in the restaurant world and was hoping you could set me up with some reccos.

First, I need a place for a late Monday night dinner (around 9am) either downtown or in Southern Indiana. That's when I'm rolling into town. I know Mondays can be a tough night since I lot of places are closed.

Second, I need a good independent place in Southern Indiana I can take my mother for dinner during the week. Nothing fancy required, but I'd like to try someplace I haven't been if there are new places around.

Thanks!

Blind Pig is closed on Mondays. I think Rye might be closed then as well.

Thanks, this helps! Only going to be in town a few days visiting family before I move to the east coast. I really need to find a week off where I can explore a bit more and indulge in all the food I've missed out on.

Wanted to follow-up on this. I hit Garage. Easy to get a table since it was during the UK championship game :) Pretty good place. I also managed to hit New Albanian and likewise enjoyed it. Looks like Louisville restaurants continue to go strong. Maybe one day I'll get to spend a week or two in town and really go crazy. Aaron.

Aaron are you of any relation to Joseph (?) Renn of Renn's Saloon in New Albany around the turn of the 1900's?

I don't recall any Renn's being in the saloon business. My branch of the Renn family is concentrated near Sellersburg. But there have been Renn's in the area since the mid-1800's at least, so anything is possible. You've got me curious so I may ask around as I talk to relatives about this.

If so, they were among the previous owners of my building at 116 West Main St. in New Albany according to my research.

Here's what my dad had to say on the topic:

I have nothing on the tavern but there were only two Joseph Renns who lived during this time (as adults) and one was a priest for over 50 years so I don't think it was him. (Father "Cosmo" was the name he used.) The other Joseph Renn was my Great-Grandfather, Peter Renn's brother. Joseph and Peter were sons of the original settler, Peter P. Renn. So, if I took a stab at it, I'd say Joseph the saloon keeper was your great-great uncle. He died in 1942 at age 83.
