Mom's turning 70 . . .

by Robin F. » Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:59 pm

and I want to take her to a nice lunch. We've been to Corbett's, so that's off the table. They go to Limestone on a fairly regular basis, so maybe nothing farther east? Also, she has a shellfish allergy.

Suggestions? Thanks!

If she enjoys Italian Martini's in the Summit is very nice. If it's a nice day and you want something a little less formal setting outside at Captain's Quarters would be a nice place. If you want a little smaller meal in a very nice setting Verbena would be a very nice choice than you could go around the corner for some Gelato!

Ghyslain? Not expensive and no table service but it's such a lovely place for two ladies to have lunch. Happy birthday to your Mom!

Harvest would be another excellent choice. 211 Clover if they do lunch.

We love Lilly's for lunch. Always very elegant and a great value.

Happy Birthday to Mom!

All of those are great options and the $15 three course prix fixe lunch at Lilly's is one of the city's better deals! :D

If your in the Highlands, I also like either Jack Fry's, Avalon or the Uptown Cafe for a nice upscale lunch for ladies as well.

Either Ghyslain or Caffe Classico.

This reply is coming from a 70-yr-old mom. Of those suggested already, I'd be most pleased with 211 Clove Lane (yes, they do serve lunch T-S) or Lillys, but my number one choice would be The Restaurant at Science Hill in Shelbyville. It is a lovely step-back in time and that is something that most of us 70-year-old like upon occasion. Stopping at Gilberto Gelato after any of them would be an added treat!

Thanks guys! I'm leaning toward 211 Clover (but Science Hill is an intriguing option). I would like to take her to Ghyslain sometime, but want her to feel pampered on her birthday.

Yeah, that is it. Ghyslain is good lunch place for most times, but it just doesn't have the aura of pampering.

Robin,

I think 211 Clover will be lovely. Given the weather, you might also check if their patio is open ( or whether your Mom has a preference).

Enjoy!

I know I get myself in trouble every time I say this, but I just don't get all the love for Ghyslain. It's okay, but it really strikes me mostly as a slightly more fancy Panera, with good quality but not exceptional (a bit too "assembly line") chocolates on the side.

Robin,

That's because you are not a lady. :D
I'd agree that the chocolates are okay ( I much prefer CoCos or Cellar Door), but the environment is so lovely - I feel like I'm in Paris. I found the food to be very good and the highly decorated desserts to be fantastic and gorgeous. Perfect for a lovely ladies lunch.

If you want to be a tad different, two options:

1. The Glitz at Irish Acres in Nonesuch KY . . . it's on-line, an easy drive down to the Versailles area, and the Glitz is in the basement of one of the largest antique stores east of the Hudson River. Somehow people from New York, Chicago, and other cities make it there regularly, but few from Louisville seem aware. They are on-line.

2. Go to Midway. You have Holly Hill Inn, along with several nice places on the Midway main street, and it's always fun to walk around there!
