With all of the other dishes that has been Americanized, bastardized, etc., why not? Personally, I am not very interested in a gyros with BBQ sauce, but why is it such a travesty? Isn't this BBQ gyros just another bastardized Americanized dish that is part of cuisine evolution? In all likelihood, the traditional gyros as we know it today may have been a variation of something from the times Alexander the Great. Who knows? Perhaps there was a time when the idea of gyros being served on pita bread or with tzatziki sauce was as objectionable then as gyros with BBQ sauce is today.

After all, many fusion restaurants do very well. Perhaps not ones that would offer Gyros ala Kraft American Singles, but nevertheless.........

Ray, I think it all comes down to expectations. There's a certain way we expect a Gyros and that doesn't include BBQ sauce and if a major change like that is made it should be called something else! Kind of those same way that a seafood dish called a Hot Brown is not what we expect or Martinis are expected a certain way and all of these concoctions that are called martinis really aren't!

All of the Halal/Gyro carts in NYC (on every corner) offer a Red Chili sauce that goes on top of the Tzaziki sauce...

...and it's absolutely amazing, and will light your ass up.

Can't imagine BBQ sauce, but the Red Chili sauce they use up there in addition to the Z sauce is unreal. My favorite gyros on the planet.

In Turkey you can get red sauce on your Döner Kebap. I wouldn't call it BBQ as it's heavily pepper based. But it does have sugar and vinegar in it.

Mmmmm...... DÖNER!

I believe that Zaytun's offers red pepper sauce as a topping and they serve one of the best gyros in the area.

In the neighborhood in Queens where I grew up, there was a little kosher place. They had two sauces, one made with tahini, and one red one which was basically hot sauce. No tatziki obviously b/c they were kosher. They called them shawarma, but it was shaved meat cut off a cone on flatbread, so I think they're comparable.
