Gyros Real Deal?

by Ray Griffith » Tue Mar 13, 2012 4:24 pm

Does anyone know of a local restaurant serving gyros that actually stacks the lamb and beef on the spool in-house vs buying it preformed from Kronos or Sysco?

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Ok just read your post again, and realize this is not what you are taking about!! All I can say is that one would have to get the herbs exactly right, to make it taste like gyros meat. It could be done, not sure how much they would have to sell for, because if you are putting slabs of meat on the spit, it will be expensive.

The cones from Kronos are preformed too. They are premformed into a huge slab instead of being preformed into individual pieces. In Greece, they use actual joints of meat. which is pork. No-one believes me when I tell them this, they think it is lamb, but it is not. I have sold 40,345 gryos, one person refused to buy one because it was not from a cone, and three people have asked me if they are from a cone. Out of the 40,345 only two people have not liked them. Have you tried mine? I think you would be pleasantly surprised.

So, the cone meat you get from Kronos is not the real deal either. Short of spicing slabs of pork yourself, you are not even going to come close to an authentic greek gryos here. I actually prefer mine to the ones I got in Crete for two reasons. One, there is no fat, something which was quite common in Crete, hence I only ate them at 3in the morning when I was drunk, and two, I put way more stuff on mine.

Hi Alison...
Im guessing Ray was thinking more along the lines of a shawarma or a doner kabob. At least thats what I was thinking. And yes, weve had your gyros and enjoyed them very much. Im just looking for something thats made with "real"cuts of meat...be it beef.pork, lamb or preferable a combination of them.
Something like this would be good.

Thank you John, you summed it up nicely.

Allison,
As for Kronos' preformed meat, that's what I was saying. I was looking for the way it is pictured in John's post, as well as the way I have had them all over Europe and the Middle East VERSUS the preformed. (haven't been to Greece or Crete though)

Anyway, I'm sure yours are fine and I've been wanting to try yours. However, I'm still in search of the layered variety.

Here is are some cone pictures from Sahara in Lexington:

By looking at them, can you guys tell if they are Kronos, Sysco, or something else? They certainly taste good, and the place has its own attached butcher shop.

Sahara is a good and popular place, but beware that they close unusually early: 7pm most nights (and they often run out of food even before that). They also don't brew their own iced tea or sell beer/wine, but otherwise they are a shining star in the paltry Lexington food scene. And I believe that their beef kebabs are by far the best "steak" in town--forget about the roadkill that they serve at the Malone's empire.

There's a place on Westport Road that has the cone-of-meat gyros. It's a Persian (i believe) grocery at the opposite end of the shopping strip from La Rosita. The address there is 8730 Westport Road.

Be aware that this isn't a sit-down restaurant. It's a small specialty grocery with halal meat shop. Since there's nowhere to sit and eat, your order's to go. And they don't serve fries.

But the gyros are very good, the owner is very friendly. While he's carving the meat off the cone, check out some of the different foods he sells.

I worked for Sysco for about 10 years & they buy their meat cones from Kronos, so Sysco & Kronos are the same thing.

Mirage on Preston Hwy has the best gyro meat I have ever tasted, it's a combo of beef & lamb. Not sure if it is hand cut & stacked, but it is the most tender I have ever tasted, and does not seem nearly as processed as some I have had. I would give it a try.

Al Watan on Hikes Ln is fantastic. You get a gyro, fries, and a drink for like $7. The pitas are fresh, and the meat is delicious. We LOVE it!

I haven't been into the new Aladin's since they first opened where the Amazing Grace used to be (they were so new the heat wasn't even on and it was cold that day), but I've been wondering if they planned to serve prepared food? Anyone else know? Of course I could just go check for myself and let you guys know too...

Hey Michelle...love the Al Watan, it my definitely my favorite(used to be Bosna Mak) in town. Just to be clear though, thats not what Ray and myself were looking for. Al Watan is the preformed processed stuff, delicious, just not the same as stacks of slowly rotating meat cuts.

Make your own on the grill!

Use the rotisserie grill cooking method instead of the oven method.
