All,
This is a very generous, talented guy with a fantastic heart who has donated a huge amount to this community. Please keep in mind that there are two sides to every story, and in this country we are innocent until proven guiltly. I think it would be great if all of us on Hotbytes wouldn't feed the gossip and add to the atttention on this.

Deb

Since the Courier-Journal, WDRB, and WHAS have had it on their web pages since last night, and likely will be featuring it in the paper/tv/et al, it's like locking the barn after the horse has run off . . .

Just a thought, but we might be able to help more by reflecting on the good he has done for the community, and hope that if good deeds get broadcast then as a first-time offender with a minimal quantity of pills (I hope) he'll get off with probation (if he is in fact guilty)

Just another in a long list of examples of the media collectively saying "let's-breathlessly-report-the-story-before-we-have-all-the-facts-and-in-the-process-make-it-sound-as-sensational-as-possible". Buncha ass-hammers. I fricking gaurauntee that once all the facts are known this whole <gasp> drug dealing thing will turn out to be 90% bullsh**.

Yeah, I'm with Andrew. The horses are out, down over the hill and headed off into the sunset.

I'm sure Chef Dean loves the publicity when the news is good, so he has to accept it when it isn't.

Well said, Deb. Even reading the original article, it's pretty clear that this isn't a matter of grass, coke or recreational drug use. I'm guessing a breakdown of the way the medical system ought to work led eventually down this road, but what do I know? I'm thinking that making a simple buy of a controlled, not an illegal, substance hardly justifies breathless use of television time.

The entire circumstances of the arrest sound kind of suspicious. It's not as if he is someone they had been watching over time making multiple transactions. It was a one of exchange and we don't even know who the "buyer" and for all we know could have even been a plant!

We all know Dean and his great work and generosity and I'm quite sure when the true story comes out the cause of the events will be his generosity. He probably thought he was helping someone who really needed it.

If I were a betting man, I would be "all in" that the final version of this story does not even remotely resemble the conclusion that media sources are allowing readers/viewers to draw with their early reporting of these half-facts.

As a matter of fact, given the many many wonderful things I have heard about the man...Given the countless acts of "under the radar" kindness and generosity I have heard attributed to Chef, I would be very surprised if this whole thing wasn't just a case of him trying to help someone with a legitimate need.

I mean think about it. Someone you know is in pain...maybe they've got a toothache fer Christ's sake and they can't afford to go to the dentist AND buy the drugs to help the pain go away. Here's Dean, maybe he's got a bottle of something leftover in his medicine cabinet that would help the poor feller out for a day or two...until he gets paid and can get to the dentist. I mean I dunno, you could probably shoot all kinds of holes in this particular scenario but like I said, if I'm a betting man, I'm betting something LIKE this is closer to the truth than what is being breathlessly reported in the local media.

Just MHO.

I think I remember him having some medical problems. Unfortunately, it seems pretty common to get addicted to pain pills after they've been prescribed.

Dean has had major pain issues for some time. The fact that he had the pills in his possession is perfectly logical. Knowing Dean and the kind of man he is, and all the things he does to help others, I have no doubt that the final story will be something more along the lines as Steve P suggests.

The facts will come out over time, but unfortunately the headlines could do harm to a man who gives so much and asks for nothing in return. I am so glad to see the support here, and hopefully Dean will see this too and feel some encouragement from the outpouring of support here.

Dean is a great man and I am sorry that he has to deal with this negative publicity. He does a lot and I mean a lot for this community and local charities and I want to personally thank him for being the first owner to donate to APRON INC. Without batting an eye Dean gave us over $800 upfront so we could pay for our business filing as well as 501c3 status. He then donated $100 per month per restaurant for a total of $2400 up front and wants to do more.
Thank you for all you've done, you certainly have my support!!
