Dancing Sushi

by Mary Anne » Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:20 pm

OK, so the corner, more or less, of Westport Rd and Hurstbourne Pkwy, the strip mall on the south east corner, in the place where Turkey Joe's once was...is a sign saying Dancing Sushi Japanese Steakhouse. I think. I was going by at a pretty good clip but I think that is what the sign said. Anyone have any scoop?

Mary Anne, you are correct...Dancing Sushi Japanese Steakhouse. I don't have an opening date as of yet but, I have to assume in the next couple of weeks. The owner has a existing restaurant in St. Matthew's and I believe one out of town. They restaurant will have a nice sushi bar and (2) Tappan Grills.

Are we talking about the spot where Taste of Asia used to be? ( with Habana Blues and Papa Murphy's).

It is in the same strip as Taste of Asia, but the opposite end of the building, where Turkey Joe's was. Would love to know where they came up with the name, the visual I get is hysterical :)

Mary Anne, I think it's based on a Nick Network kids' cartoon show.

However, it's also in the back of my mind that "dancing sushi" - in the far more advanced world of certified Japanese itamae (sushi chefs) - is a term for a kind of shrimp sushi in which the little shellfishes are served alive, antennae dancing in the air.

I wish them great luck ( seriously). My son goes to afterschool care in the same center ( Hwang's) and we are there daily. It's a difficult location, as evidenced by the several closures and BoomBozz moving to Westport Village, but several of the businesses in the center are Asian- owned so they may be appealling to a different demographic. We'll definitely check them out.

Scott- any insights into what they are doing differently with their sushi? Fuji is only a mile away. Are they totally sushi or other specialities?

Love the cartoon, Robin, exactly as I pictured it...the live squirming shrimp sushi, not so much  That strip mall is tricky, exiting and trying to go south on Hurstbourne is almost suicidal. I'll be curious to see a menu.

Isn't there a middle lane on Hurstbourne there, though? That usually helps, since you don't have to wait for traffic on the far side to clear when an opening appears in the near lanes.

K, who wants to be first to try them? The open sign was light yesterday afternoon when I zipped by...
