When I was alittle girl, I remember one vacation on the gulf, we stopped to see my father's cousin who owned the Friendship House in Biloxi MS. I often thought about that place and back in early 2000 something, Mike and I drove down to Hattisburg MS to watch UL football and headed down to the gulf afterwards. Mike stuck his head in the gambling boat - I stayed outside and talked with the doorman who happened to be from the Ville (I don't gamble. I bet $20, lose it, and call it a day.) Anyway, they had just torn down the restaurant a few weeks earlier:-)
I researched a little and found out the Brennan family had purchased it years ago when they thought they would expand. Didn't work out.
Then recently I found out the surviving family members (Myers clan) had written a cookbook.
Jim Myers settled in Louisville in the 40s and managed a downtown Blue Boar. His future wife came in to work there. They eventually headed down to the coast and continued in the restaurant business.
I now think that we really weren't related but my parents lived downtown in the 40s. Ate out a lot and met this guy with the same last name and kept in touch:-) My father is dead too so I don't know.
I did receive the cookbook in the mail the other day and am looking forward to reading it (I love reading Southern cookbooks.)
After that long story, I'll wait and share sometime what the Louisville Historical League wrote about the history of a local restaurant family in one of their monthly newsletters. Hope I still have it. They don't update their website very often.
I'll also send more detail of the early Blue Boar experiences. These people were real characters.
Love the restaurant business.
