Maple Syrup Festival next weekend

by Deb Hall » Sun Feb 26, 2012 5:30 pm

All,

We had a great time today at the Maple Syrup Festival outside Salem, IN. ( only about an hour from the far EastEnd of Louisville). The festival is on a family farm- I found out that it's an annual tradition; our first trip out. FREE admission, tours of the process, lots of childrens activities, pioneer activities, live music, vendors. They do a great pancake/waffle breakfast with plenty of excellent maple syrup; Chicken ( and pork?) dinners for lunch and dinner. Food was great and inexpensive; people were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They sell multiple grades of maple syrup in the shop - from light amber A to grade B ( best for cooking). This syrup is Fabulous and cheaper than real maple syrup at Krogers ! ( $8.50 for a pint/ cheaper in larger quantities).

Festival continues next weekend- take a trip to country and check it out!

Deb, kudos to you and Brian for being willing to travel outside your neighborhood for something a bit different. I intended to invite you over here to get you some good cheese at Capriole farms when I saw your post about going all the way to NY for cheese. I picked up a couple of 6oz O'Bannons on Saturday.

Let me know when you guys are coming next time and thanks for giving Indiana some love!

Shane,

We know Judy and have been to Capriole several times. :D She turned me on to one of my all-time favorite cheese- ( English) Montgomery Cheddar. Another great place to visit. So cool to be in San Francisco cheese country and see her cheeses- and have the cheesemonger there be impressed that we live near this cheese-making "rock star".

We are not from here originally and don't get the "across the river" issue. We happily travel just about anywhere for great food.

Your too cool for school Deb! :D Ok, I've got a food challenge for you. Here's the ingredients. Fresh maple syrup, goat cheese (your choice), and Shuckman's smoked fish (salmon, white fish, fish eggs).

Whip up your best dish!

Oh I almost forgot the most important ingredient. Grand Marnier

Here goes:

Smoked Salmon with Chili-maple glaze, Orange salsa ( with Grand marnier) and Capriole Goat cheese, served on a bed of farmer's market lettuces.

Serve with my top-flight rocks margarita ( made with Grand Marnier, of course).
Dine alfresco- on the beach if possible. :D

We've been going to this festival for years. I've actually been sorry to see the articles about it in the CJ in the last week. I wanted to keep this "secret" all to myself. ;)

It's so much fun and really a lovely drive. We were there on Saturday for our gallon of syrup. We ration it until next year. We also like the maple sugar candy, the maple syrup cotton candy (the only kind I'll eat), and the kettle corn. Yep. We come home with a sugar rush.
