Murray's Cheese in Kroger

by Eliza W » Thu Feb 16, 2012 2:13 pm

I was in Atlanta a few months ago, and I visited the Kroger in Inman Park.

They had grass fed beef, several local vegetables (marked local), and, best of all, a Murray's cheese. It had a really great selection of both imported cheeses and local cheeses from GA and the rest of the SE. Also - BONUS - it's in the same shopping center are Morelli's.

Given our proximity to Ohio, it would seem like someone here would have insider knowledge on when, and if, this kind of Kroger is coming here. Or is there one and I'm just missing it?

As I understand it, Kroger has different "tiers" of stores which determines what kind of products they carry, store layout, among other things. Only their top tier stores have the very-nice Murray's Cheese pop up locations and those only exist in a few select regions. I have heard that this will expand but I'm not sure when. Along with Dallas and Atlanta and possible others, there are 12 or 14 locations in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky that have them. Hope that helps!!!

I would guess that the Dirty Kroger would not make the list of their top tier stores.....

I thought that myself and my fellow residents of LaGrange were only ones who had the pleasure of shopping at "Dirty Kroger."

Good morning. I am part of the Kroger/Murray's Set-up Team. I technically work for Fred Meyer (another Kroger Division) in Portland, Oregon but I travel throughout the US assisting in the opening of Murray's Cheese Shops.

Without giving too much away... there is a Murray's scheduled to open in Louisville this year; late summer as I recall. We will also be opening one in Lexington (and I am on that team). As dates solidify and I can share more information, I will.

One of my duties is to gather together lists of bloggers/foodies/local chefs/ writers/magazines, etc. whom we should include in our opening media festivities. We like to set an evening aside for our online journalists and treat you to a "peek" of what is to come. Again, as we get closer, I may call on you to steer me in the right direction to those, in addition to Robin and many of you, we will want to invite...

You can visit my blog/website to learn more about me and my passion for cheese:

Heads-up... the site is actually written by my cat, Spaulding Gray - the Feline Foodie. I am The Lady and I "help" him with spelling, typing and other mundane duties...

Glad to be a part of the group. Any cheese questions... let me knw.

I am un-familiar with the Murray's/Kroger concept (and I currently would never dream of buying high end cheeses in Kroger as I don't know how long they've sat, if they've started to take on any ammonia smell, if they've taken on a plastic taste from the wrapping, and since there is no monger present).

Does the murray's in-store concept solve some of these dilemmas? And if so what are some of the styles of cheese that are usually carried?

I greatly enjoy Cabrales, Mimolette, Reypenaer VSOP, and most washed rind taleggios.

Welcome to the forum, Marcella! I'm hoping that Murray's Cheese will be part of the huge expansion at the Prospect, KY Kroger as the current cheese selection is a bit grim.

Very Interesting news- thanks for sharing.

Please tell me it's NOT going to be the new Super Kroger on Shelbyville Road. Too close to my office ( beckons grabbing cheese for lunch  ).

Does the concept have a cheesemonger on-site? That would make a huge difference in my willingness to buy cheese there.

Thanks,
Deb

Welcome Marcella, this is very good news indeed.
Is this the Murray's that is in NYC? If so I'm even more excited as I can't imagine lending their name to anything that isn't the very best. I certainly look forward to hearing much more about this.

Let's all hope that's where it will go! Sounds like the best choice unless they do a major expansion of the one in Prospect which they're trying to do but haven't gotten approval for yet.
