Any updates on The Mellow Mushroom (St. Matts) ?

by Steve P » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:09 pm

Just wondering if anyone has their thumb on the pulse of when the Mellow Mushroom (St Matts) is going to open ? I've got some other feelers out but they haven't really produced much yet. My brutha-from-anutha-mutha who lives in Chattanooga recently told me that the 2nd Chattanooga location had opened not long ago and that they had 68 taps. He also said the bartender out there told him that he'd heard the L'ville location was shooting for 50 taps. :P

Steve, their website and/or Facebook page indicate a May opening. They are saying they will have 40 taps and 40 different bottles. Cheers!

I really can't understand why you would put another pizza place in St. Matthews. Seriously, there are other places in the city that might like a good pizza place with 50 taps.

Mellow Mushroom is aiming to open in St. Matthews in early August, according to a recent story in the Courier-Journal.

Has anyone else heard rumors about a second Mellow Mushroom on Blankenbaker Parkway, across from Southeast Christian Church? If you Google Mellow Mushroom and Blankenbaker, you find what appear to be construction plans for a restaurant (I'm unable to actually view the plans to see if they list an exact address).

In layman terms Lynnimaging is a clearing house for construction plans/bidding...A company submits plans and subscribers to the service can then bid on the job. My wife, the lovely Rebecca, has been in the construction industry for over 20 years and her current employer uses Lynnimaging (most local trademen/contractors above the "ham and egg" level do), Ms Rebecca says that it appears that the above project link is still in the bidding phase. NOTE: Just because a project gets bid is not a 100% guarantee it's going to get built.

Sure is taking a damn long time for the St. Matts Mellow Mushroom to come to fruition....I mean I get it that just tearing out the restrooms at Dutch's required haz-mat permits and procedures but dang, we're going on what ? 4 or 5 months with 3 or 4 more to go ? Must be the same people doing this job who are doing the Whiskey Row gig.

I drive by everyday, and at first, it looked like they were just clearing out Dutch's, but then the two stores next to that closed. Maybe they have been waiting for leases to run out to take over those spaces too? Now there is a huge fence in front of the old Dutch's and the two stores. Maybe that is why it is taking so long........

All we really need is another pizza place.....
That being said, having dined at the Mellow Mushroom outpost in Winston-Salem, I think their style of pizza will fit in nicely with the other abundant choices around town. IMHO, they serve a decent pie, but they are nowhere in the same league as Coal's or Papalino's. However, they offer some interesting choices for the vegetarian crowd and of course the beer selection was pretty decent and quite a step above Old Chicago's

Speaking of chain-think, the Biersch should be about ready to open.

My family and I escaped town for Derby and landed in Cincinnati. There was a Mellow Mushroom near our hotel so we gave it a shot. I really enjoyed it. The pizza was above average for a chain and I thought the sandwiches and apps were tasty as well. I was most impressed by their beer selection. I didn't count how many taps they had, but they were carrying beers from Bells, Cumberland, Dogfish Head, Moerlein, Great Lakes, Rivertown, Rogue, Harpoon, Schafly, Green Flash and Stone. I appreciate that they didn't just have a bunch of taps with all mass market offerings and they had made the effort to get some locals on board.

Parking should be interesting for them - if they are taking up that much space, which their model would indicate, there's no where near enough parking for them anywhere close.

I look forward to them opening.

Cheers,

Doug

I think they are taking the same approach to the problem Drakes did...Ignoring it.

Ermmm...there's a big parking lot just outside the back entrance of Drake's. Yes, it's shared with 60 West and Burdorf's, but 60 West is rarely hoppin' and Burdorf's isn't open when Drake's is busy.

That said, Molly Malone's St. Matthew's has, what, 12 spots? They've made it work. Parking in St. Matt's could definitely be more of a premium though if Mellow Mushroom is busy during normal bar hours.

We just received our invitation to the private V.I.P. reception...apparently we fall into the "other local dignitaries" category. Should be fun.
