Restaurants at old Masterson's?

by Mike L » Fri Feb 03, 2012 10:31 pm

I drove by there the other day but I didn't have time to look. I noticed a new building is up. Are there any restaurants in there? If so, has anyone tried them, and are they any good? I heard that Papalino's was putting a restaurant in there, but it was just a rumor.

I know that Papalino's, Comfy Cow and Home Run Burgers are in there. Think there also is a Quodaba and a couple of others I'm not sure what.

I live a few blocks away, so let me see if I can name them. Jimmy Johns, Comfy Cpow, Papalino's, Saigon One, Home Run Burgers, Qudoba. Signs indicate a vegetarian themes coming soon and Heine Bros is either in or coming soon. Reliable rumor is that the developer is holding the last available space for a breakfast place. They don't have a breakfast place - they just want one.

Also a book store is there.

I eat at the Papalino's and the Home Run Burger there and they are both exactly what you expect from the other locations. There is also a Clucker's chicken. I was thinking about trying Saigon One sometime next week. They only just recently opened and I'm pretty loyal to Annie's and Pho Binh Mihn. I like the Bazo's across the street too, but I think the Qodoba will probably run them out of business. I just don't understand what the draw to that place is. I've never really cared for them because there are better options out there. Like Bazo's :D

If a breakfast place like Wild Eggs goes in there they are certainly going to have to change their hours from their normal model! Their normal hours certainly don't mesh well with those of college students!

Saigon One is no threat to your favs, Dan. No threat at all. And I agree Bazo's is better than Qudoba, but there's that old saying in real estate, "location, location, location."

Quills Coffee is open and Green Leaf Vegetarian was still pretty rough looking inside when we were last there. we went to Saigon 1 and it was OK, but they had no real explanations of what most of the Vietnamese dishes were (other than some pictures on the wall), so we saw most of the college types ordering the familiar from the Chinese menu. The summer rolls were very good. Cluckers looks more like a bar than a chicken joint, but we have not gone in yet. Too hard to pass up Papalinos and Comfy Cow!

What Suzi said. No menu explanations of the Vietnamese dishes and my spring roll set a new standard for greasy. And not in a good way. The Chicken Lo Mein which my dining companion ordered is made with dark meat chicken which she refuses to eat, so there was a lot of dish deconstructing going on.

As an UofL employee, I'm glad all those places are there, but I can't imagine how many of them will still be there a year from now. I know they've built a number of dorms around the area but the students all have meal plans that can't be used in the restaurants there. When I remember how hard it was for City Cafe to make a go of it across the street from there, I wonder how all these new restaurants can possibly make a go of it.

As an example, I went to Cluckers on a Sunday night around dinner time and there were more people working there than there were customers. Hopefully when the implosion does come, Paplino's will survive. Not only is the pizza there as good as the original, they also started serving a couple subs that are really good.

Most areas with large universities don't have a problem supporting near-campus restaurants. Maybe UofL students love their on-campus options more than students at other places, but I know when I was in college I'd gladly let some of my meal-plan dollars go to waste for the sake of getting better food and more variety off campus.

From what I've seen, Papalino's is almost always hopping, especially at lunch. Qdoba and HRB seem to be steady. Saigon One may be in trouble. I've never seen anybody in there. Quills may make all of its profit off me alone.

I thought that I heard the Papalino's folks say (or maybe it was written on here) that students could use their meal plan cards for food in these restaurants. Just not for beer.

I thought I had heard that for several of the restaurants in that location.

Actually it is a Quills Coffee and it is open.

Cluckers is a chicken/bar place... College Coop is a general store. There is a convenient type store but they don't sell news papers... oh wait, it is a college place and they are all online readers.

There is great WiFi there.

I just tried visiting the UofL Dining Services page, but it seems to be down.

Looks like they'll take your money on the UofL swipe card, but it won't count for the meal plan.

Mandatory meal plans weaken the ability for competition to improve the product served. The company gets your money up front, and you are stuck accepting what is offered.

Check the "small-print" italics. The linked website is down.
