Palermo and Majid's - does it get any better

by Robin F. » Sun Jan 29, 2012 2:37 pm

We had a fabulous dinner last night at Palermo. It was a little odd when we first got there, the place seemed pretty empty but the hostess said she would have to ask if we could eat at the bar since there are only 3 people in the kitchen. There was a couple ahead of us also waiting for a table. It turns out, they were waiting on a party of 21 (that I think got bigger) so were trying to plan ahead. Once we learned that, it didn't seem weird.

Any who, we were granted permission to eat at the bar and boy are we happy about that fact. Michelle, bartender/server/seemed to be manager, was fantastic! She was there when we needed her but didn't hover, which might have been a challenge since there doesn't appear to be much room behind the bar. We started with our favorite app, the cocida (grilled asparagus, flattened fried portabello, provolone, sweet potato fries, roasted tomato and a yummy dipping sauce). I always forget how great their bread it until I'm wolfing it down. For entrees we both got 8 oz of the tenderloin. Cooked perfectly medium rare with a tangy chimichurri for dipping. My salad was hearts of palm, yellow pepper and carrot. Hub's was same except lettuce instead of carrot. We enjoyed a bottle of Malbec with our meal. Top to bottom, it was one of the best meals we've had in awhile.

Being satiated with food, but still looking for fun, we headed to Majid's for cocktails. Naturally, Majid greeted us before we even got in the door. Stephen was there and made me what is now my favorite martini (okay - he made me more than one, but who's counting). Hub had a fancy Pimm's cup and then Bucca and a Bean. We got to sample the kimchi brussels sprouts (yum!) and the jasmine/lemon granita (so refreshing). It was a great time!

So, eat at Palermo Viejo, drink/eat at Majids. You'll be glad you did!

I ate at Palermo a couple weeks ago. It was phenomenal. They make the best sweetbreads in town. hands down.
