Who's got gluten-free dishes on the menu?

by Robin Garr » Thu Jan 26, 2012 11:30 am

A friend of ours was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, making him one of the people who really do need gluten-free dining. Sam loves to dine out, so he's seriously looking around for Louisville's excellent restaurants that offer at least one no-gluten item on the menu.

I know P.F. Chang's has a gluten-free section, and good on 'em for doing so. But how about our indies? Can we put together a good list for my buddy?

A dear old friend of mine recently visited town with her husband, and presented me with this challenge for our dinner out: many gluten-free items, full bar (she wanted a good martini), open on a Sunday - and obviously indie, since she wanted something she couldn't have where she was from. I, of course, wanted to show off the Louisville restaurant scene, since it's been awhile since she's lived here.

What a challenge. I looked and looked at places open on Sundays, and sent her options so she could check out the menus, but she didn't really see anything that fit the "gluten-free" bill until I sent her Majid's. There were plenty of options on there for her to eat, and you couldn't FIND anyone more accommodating than Majid if you tried. He came out to talk to us, and assured her any dish that was cooked or dredged in a sauce would be rejiggered so as not to include the normal gluten ingredients. They ended up loving the place - so I'd add Majid's to your list. Open on a Sunday, hallelujah.

I know Mayan Cafe has always made an effort to be gluten free friendly. You can actually view the menu on their website with allergen info, and it outlines everything that has both gluten and dairy in it, and even says where substitutions can be made.

I am pretty sure that Dragon King's Daughter also has a GF menu available on request, which probably means that Maido does as well, since it is back under Toki's command.

Sweet Surrender also has several gluten free dessert options. We always have at least one option on hand but usually have more like 4 options available each day. Options include but are not limited to:

Mocha Concord
Flourless Chocolate Ganache Torte
Salted Caramel Coconut Chocolate Torte
Cheesecake with a Pecan Crust
French Macarons
Coconut Macaroons
Meringues
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

We have a wide variety of our dishes that either already are, or can be very slightly adjusted to be, gluten free. In a lot of cases we can just leave off or switch a sauce, and that is the only modification necessary. We have a fryer that is not used for anything containing gluten either, so fried foods aren't an issue with us for those with Celiacs. We can be found on the list in the post above to the gluten friendly restaurant page.

We have a large variety of gluten free items on our regular menu (as well as vegetarian). I am trying to go a little more Italian meets southern comfort foods down here and it is working out well with lots of great feedback. My favorite right now is our 48 hour Creekstone Farms Beef Short Ribs which are completely gluten free as well. Let me know if and when your friend comes in Robin. I would love to say hi.

Mitchell's at the Summit has a gluten free menu - link here: http://www.mitchellsfishmarket.com/cmr/files/content/MFM_Gluten_Free.pdf
Since it's a chain, I'd still call ahead to confirm the menu is the same (and still available at the Louisville location - it was last time I ate there with a GF-friend, but that's been at least a year now).

Martini's at the Summit also used to have a gluten free menu, but I don't know if that's changed now that the ownership has, too. They no longer have a gluten free menu online. Their dinner menu notes that you can get gluten free pasta...but makes no mention of which sauces (if any) are GF.

Earth Friends Cafe has several items that can be made gluten free, or are already. I have also seen her make arrangements to have a gluten free waffle one Saturday morning for a customer...she just asked that the customer let her know she was coming.

EFC is on Grantline in NA.
