Valentine's Eve/Day events posted here

by Robin Garr » Mon Jan 16, 2012 6:07 pm

Restaurauteurs, chefs, even non-affiliated fans are welcome to post announcements of Valentine's Day and related local events in this topic, which will stay "pinned" until after Feb. 14.

Please remember to include details such as time and price, and just the facts, please: It will be a kindness to spare us the kind of exaggeration and superlatives that PR writers are paid to add and that I have to spend extra time taking out. 8)

Also, don't forget to change the "Subject:" of your post to identify the restaurant. Thanks!

Marketplace Restaurant @ theater square

by DMcGarity » Fri Jan 27, 2012 10:18 pm

We are doing a pre-fixe menu that will run starting Thursday Feb 9th until Tuesday Feb 14th for $50/person with optional wine pairings as well as our regular menu. I have even made the pre-fixe accessible to vegetarians! I know you veggies out there don't get to go out and splurge on these special nights as easily so I wanted to make it a piece of cake.

We are also going to have champagne specials to go along with that if you would prefer a nice bottle of bubbles instead of wine. Live Jazz and a completely unique atmosphere.

Here is the menu and I hope to see some of you for our Valentine's festivities. Thanks!

Valentine's at The Green Door in Corydon

by Jesse Badger » Wed Feb 01, 2012 11:24 pm

This will be the Valentine's Day menu offered at The Green Door Saturday, February 9th, and Tuesday, February 14th. We will be serving our normal brunch tasting menu on Sunday, but if you want to make it romantic, we can randomly add VD cliches like chocolate covered strawberries to each course. Or maybe just pour champagne over everything. Because that is how we roll.

Anyway, here's the menu:

"GD.VD.2012

amuse
pizza margherita
roma tomato
basil chiffonade
mozzarella

1st
arugula salad
garlic and ricotta fritters
olive tapenade croutons
balsamic and italian herb vinaigrette

2nd
truffle and cream
housemade linguine
cremini and white wine ragout
parmesan-regiano

3rd
seared branzino
maple-orange reduction
crispy roasted potatoes
broccoli rabe

or

"osso bucco"
white wine braised veal shank
valencia orange gremolata
rosemary polenta
broccoli rabe

4th
tiramisu
sponge cake french press coffee
rosewater scented whipped mascarpone
chocolate shavings
coffee syrup

please specify osso bucco or branzino when making your reservation"

It kind of looks like we all called each other and decided to do sea bass for VD this year, doesn't it?

A Culinary Guide to Romance
February 2012

Nothing better illustrates the connection between the body, mind and spirit than a delicious meal of mystical aphrodisiacs, served with candlelight and wine. The physical effects on libido are a combination of science and lore, but more importantly, aphrodisiacs fire our imaginations and fill our hearts with the magic of love.

"A jug of wine, a loaf of bread -- and thou." -Edward Fitzgerald

Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and sexuality, rose from the sea covered in foam, bearing gifts to restore and invigorate our sexuality and fertility. She enchanted and incited love (and lust) in all who saw her. She gave birth to Eros, the winged cupid of love. Our Aphrodisiac menus pay tribute to her mythology.

Super-fresh oysters from the Puget Sound headline our menu's hors d'oeuvres course. Aphrodite arose from the sea on an oyster shell and from that time forward, the little erotically shaped nugget was in high demand. Roman Emperors paid for them by their weight in gold. Casanova ate 50 of them in his morning bath, licking them off the breasts of his lover from the night before. The oysters are dressed with ginger, which powers up the circulatory system and carrots, which have been associated with stimulation since ancient times.

The Perfumed Garden refers to a 15th century Arabic work of erotic literature and love advice. Our version of the garden includes grape leaves stuffed with high-zinc pine nuts. Zinc is an important key to male potency. You'll also find a spinach-and-walnut caviar, the latter loaded with omega-3, which keeps hormones at peak levels.

The Mediterranean Napolean layers olives, which are associated with increased virility and drive; tomatoes, which were known as "love apples" among the Puritans; and arugula, which has been documented as an aphrodisiac since the 1st century A.D.

The shrimp in our Gambas a la Pil Pil originate, of course, from Aphrodite's sea. We dress them in paprika, which has been credited through history for erotic impulses, and garlic, perhaps the most famous romantic stimulant of all.

No menu of love would be complete without an onion soup. In every ancient culture onions were touted as vital for sexual potency. In France, newlyweds were served onion soup the day after their wedding to restore their sexual vigor. Fearing these properties, onions were banned in many ancient religious houses and convents. The warriors of ancient Rome ate onions to generate energy and stamina.

The chemicals that produce endive's unique flavor are considered by many to be an aphrodisiac. In addition to endive and carrots, our Eros Salad also contains almonds, which have been seen as fertility symbols for centuries. Samson wooed Delilah with almonds and poets have long asserted their aromas aroused passion. The green goddess dressing is loaded with avocado, a food whose Spanish name refers to the shape of part of the male anatomy. Catholic priests in Spain found it so sexual they forbade it.

The proteins from our menu's entrée course will flood your bloodstream with amino acids that enhance mental alertness and concentration. The Romesco sauce for our snapper is made with the powerhouse aphrodisiacs of almonds and garlic. It's paired with fennel, a source of plant estrogen, leeks from the onion family, zinc-laden manilla clams and perfumed with saffron, a spice said to stimulate the erogenous zones.

Beef, in particular, works on your libido and has been known to bring out the "inner cave man." We serve the Prime Rib alongside asparagus, which has long been exalted for its aphrodisiac powers. French bridegrooms were required to eat multicourse meals of nothing but asparagus for its powers to arouse.

The mushrooms in our risotto deliver earthy aromas that arouse the senses. It's also tossed with asparagus tips and truffle oil. Truffles were considered by the Greeks and Romans as aphrodisiacs for their musky scent and texture.

Finally, relax, dream, and eat dessert. Chocolate is one of our best known and loved aphrodisiacs. It contains over 400 chemicals, some of which are believed to arouse the same feelings that we experience when we are in love. Legend has it that Montezuma drank 50 cups of cocoa before entering his harem of several hundred women. Honey was prescribed by Hippocrates for sexual vigor and its dripping, sweet, sticky image has been connected with love and sensuality in the Kama Sutra and the Bible. The scent of vanilla is believed to increase lust. Lore has it that the young daughter of the Mexican fertility goddess loved a boy but unable to marry him because of her divine nature, transformed herself into a plant -- the vanilla orchid -- that would provide pleasure and happiness.

And don't forget our Sommelier's wine pairings! Wine may be the ultimate aphrodisiac, with its sensuous perfume and texture. It overcomes shyness and lessens inhibitions.
