Varanese - our first visit last night

by Ellen P » Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:48 am

Since I decided to make the 3rd Friday of each month, my new restaurant night, I have found that there have been other opportunities to go to a new restaurant.
Last night was my older daughter's birthday. We had already had the family gathering at the house on Sunday, but last night was the restaurant celebration.
5 of us sat at the bar. Quiet Tuesday evening. Early. (Awful UL game was on the tv :( We all have a fear of Louisville table service so that's why we sat at the bar.
Roy was our bartendar and was just great.
We share the large appetizer plate plus an extra sweet potato biscuit/pulled pork plate. We had 4 entrees, 1 was shared, the other 3, we took half home after having the appetizers.
Marsha had a lovely chocolate dessert plate and the musicians played happy birthday.
John stopped by and thanked us for coming in.
It has a range of food and price points that it is easily accessible to every event.
It was really a lovely evening and we will add it to our new fav list.
Thanks, Ellen

Varanese is one of our favorites too. We have had several "date and couples" nights out there and we had never had anything less than an absolute stellar experience. The food, service and atmoshpere are all excellent! :D
We would like to dine there more, but with so many other worthy options out there, it's hard to fit them all in as often as we would like.

What does this mean? Sorry to pick out a quote in your post but I couldn't get past this.
In the past couple of months I have noticed quite a few people complaining about service issues. Maybe I am very easy going but I dine out ALOT (3-4 time a week) and I honestly can't remember the last time I had bad service.
What could have possibly happened to cause your entire family to "fear Louisville table service"?

It's those sociopathic, predatory servers we have here who go around deliberately dumping beans and orange juice in people's laps.

Rather than be an antagonistic UK fan, I would like you to know that if you would to switch allegiances to a real college basketball team, rather than taunt you, I would graciously support you and your decision to leave a sad situation for the better.

Go Cats.

Also, Varanese is one of our favorite places to dine as well. I almost always order one of the specials, and am never disappointed.

Disappearing servers. No interest. Young. Not sharing specials. Extra charges (3 entrees instead of 1). Waiting on others first instead of our table which was there first. (Biggest pet peeve)

It's not all the servers. Bad tables. Tables at the front door. Tables in the pathway to the kitchen.

Not getting waited on at all. That happens alot. If someone stops by and tells us our server will be with us, but more often than not, no one does, so after 7 min - 5 min. is too soo - we leave.

So, we sit at the bar. At least we'll get a drink. Get waited on. Won't be at the door or in the pathway to the kitchen or bathrooms.

Also, quite frankly, I don't know if I want to order that much food when I go out and I hate to take up a table with out sharing an appetizer and maybe an entree. I think that is cheating the server and tying up their table and the restaurants for an opportunity to make more.

Does this help?
(I'll never be a blue fan.)

I definitely agree about sitting in the bar. You get to pick your table, and bartenders generally provide good service.

*shrug*

I've sat at plenty of bars where I got less attention (and slower) than I'd have gotten at a table.
