Papa Johns - I liked it...a lot.

by Steve P » Mon Jan 09, 2012 12:15 pm

OK...So last week I made a post-holiday-relative-relocation-trip back to Ohio (I took my mom back to Ohio after the holidays). We arrived back home too late and too tired to cook anything, so we ended up ordering pizza from <gasp> Papa Johns.

First off let me say I haven't had a Papa Johns pizza in years, I've always associated it with kids sleepovers (when my daughters were of that age) and I think the last time tried it was "by the slice" at a NASCAR race (where it was definitely a lap down to the competition). So honestly I didn't hold much in the way of expectations this time around.

Pulling up the website (to find the phone number and nearest location) I noticed one could actually order a pizza "online"....Never had done that before so what the hell...We placed the order via the "send" button and then settled back to wait. 20 minutes later (right on time) the driver showed up with what turned out to be a very good (large-thin-crust) pizza. I was freaking amazed. The crust was awesome. The sauce nice and bold. All the toppings were top notch...and they got every one of them right. Nothing will ever replace my love for Coals (and any number of other "pizzeria" pizzas) but I certainly won't be turning up my nose at Papa Johns the next time someone suggests ordering one in for the "big game" or a race...I really was excellent pizza.

OH, come on guys! Papa John's is actually the best of the chains as far as delivery pizza goes. As much as Domino's and Pizza Hut proclaims and trys to produce. PJ's is defiantly the best of the 3.

Now, I will admit that I adore Wicks, as well as Boom Bozz, but neither deliver to me (I think), and hence, I go with the Papa!

Yes, it's a chain....but it is a chain with LOCAL ROOTS. And let's face it, Papa John has done ALOT for the community.

Cheers!

Nooooooo. Bud Lite is only for pairing as a side car with a Bloody Mary. I can't recall which one but I paired the Papa John's with either a Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold or a Southern Tier Pale Ale.

I'll still take Little Cesar's over Papa John's. But yes it is better than Pizza Hut or Domino's.

I am kind of a big deal.

Also don't forget that the very first Papa John's pizzas were prepared in a closet in a bar in Jeff...I'm thinking that is pretty local.

Not to threadjack but if you haven't tried Domino's Bacon and Jalapeno Stuffed Cheese Bread, do so immediately. It's the best thing I've seen come from a chain pizza place, possibly ever.

For delivered pizza I'm a Domino's guy - I have not tried PJ in years. I never liked their crust - we can give it another shot some time.

Are you saying PJ is now out of the closet?

I've always found their sauce too sweet for my taste - that's my real reason for not liking it.

Mark,

For the record we had their "thin" crust...It rocked. For old times sake we also elected the "square cut" option (which is how I remember pizza from "back in the day")

Was sitting in an airport bar in Minneapolis last Wednesday, when the man next to me ordered a "Weekender" Bloody Mary. I thought of you, Steve, when it came with the cheap beer side car. My first time witnessing that.

And this "Weekender" was a interesting concoction. I guess it is best described as a "full meal" Bloody Mary. It came filled with "dressing" kabobs that included pickles, cheese, meats, etc. Everything's heartier up North, I suppose.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

the pizza may be alright, but i cannot stand the guy.let's just say i had a "service" experience with this man and he was one of the most abusive a-holes i have ever met. not just to me, but to everyone in the immediate area. he gets zero of my dollars.

and btw, anyone who stars in their own commercials AND puts their kids on t.v. is a giant d-bag in my opinion.
