Paella throwdown

by Will Crawford » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:26 pm

Chefs-
Anyone interested in doing a Paella throwdown? I am looking to do a fundraiser and wondering if this may be of interest. I know that there are only a few restaurants in town doing paella but maybe some of the chefs out there would like to try their hand at it. Are there any other ideas for a throwdown.

Thanks
Will Crawford

My lovely spouse is preparing a vegetarian paella as we speak.....guess that she wouldn't be eligible to participate in a throwdown but we would show up for one if it includes vegetarian options. Best paella of my experience was at a New Years Eve party in Miami 20+ years ago. Prepared by a friend who was a native of Colombia.

I love me some paella, but my concern is that it doesn't really travel/hold well (especially that delicious crusty bit on the bottom), which is why all the good places do it to order. Also it tends to consist of some fairly expensive ingredients (saffron, seafood, snails). I wouldn't want a throw down to turn into a money pit for restaurants donating their products and labor.

Maybe something more cost effective? Seeing Ronnie makes me think of Jambalaya or Gumbo.

or maybe a reuben throwdown?

Or BBQ ;)

I have to agree- besides how many of us keep a Paella pan of adequate size around?

Nonetheless, you know I'm always game for some friendly competition for a great cause!

That's just the thing, Jambalaya is a descendant of the mighty paella and demonstrates the versatility of the dish. Not sure how these throwdown things work, but would there not be enough time to work up a good paella on site? Would it need to travel?

If we don't go paella, but want to stick with Spain, what about an authentic Spanish tortilla throwdown?

I hear you on the cook, travel, hold thing.
Jambalaya or Gumbo could be fun. Any other ideas?

All-ya-all would start out 8 point underdogs in a Gumbo match up...Selena's would kick some serious ass here...I guarantee.
