Penzeys is Coming

by Ken Wilson » Thu Jan 05, 2012 11:58 am

http://insiderlouisville.com/news/2012/01/05/penzeys-spices-to-open-louisville-store-in-march/

It looks as though national retailers are discovering Louisville. What does it mean for our weird and cozy local small businesses? The fact is, I can't imagine a local replacement for Penseys - too good and too thorough. Is Trader Joe's hurting anybody? Dunno, but I don't think so. Am I happy about that Bruegger's? You bet. But all said, we better watch out. There's more to come, no doubt - and some could actually hurt the local feel here.

But the fact is - Penseys's spices are the best and I'll be there.

Yeah, I got that Email this morning. Mea culpa, I should have posted it earlier, but I had to get coffee and a haircut.

The Email was in the form of a graphic, which is a pain, but here it is:

I was generally pleased until I got to the part about it being in that automobile hell called Shelbyville Road. I'll most likely continue to order from the catalog.

Great news :!: Now we won't have to worry about shipping costs but will have to pay taxes on purchases online or at the store now. It will still be nice to browse through everything instead of in a catalog. I do wish the location was different however.

Lotsa Pasta sells a lot of spices, too.

Frankly, I loved Penzey's when it first hit the 'net, but as time goes by, I find that they cater more and more to spice-mix stuff that doesn't interest me. I would really much rather mix my own, thanks.

But that said, their Tellicherry black peppers are da bomb, and they're a go-to source for some other stuff, too.

This will also mean that state sales tax will be collected when ordering from them online.

(SARCASM) I love the location. I hope every other national chain of food stores open there as well.(\SARCASM) It is typical of those kind of companies. Where is Whole Paycheck? Where is Trader Joe's? Oh, we have to be there too.

There is NO sales tax on that kind of food in KY.

FYI FWIW

Penzeys
Annatto Seeds 1.2 oz. 1/4 cup jar
$2.75

NUTS N STUFF
Annatto Seeds 1 oz. $.65 AND YOU CAN BUY 1/2 OUNCE IF YOU WANT.

Penzeys
Mustard Seed Yellow 1.4 oz. 1/4 cup jar
$2.49

NUTS N STUFF
Mustard Seeds Yellow 1 oz. $.70 AND YOU CAN BUY 1/2 OUNCE IF YOU WANT.

And currently NUTS N STUFF is the only place in town to you can get your Pretzel Bread.

The lower cost is phenomenal. And, you get FREE advice at NUTS N STUFF from people who actually know how to cook with what they are selling you.

I have no financial interest in NUTS N STUFF, but, I really do like it. It's Local for all you locobusinessvores.

I keep flashing back to the Fast Food Wars when Taco Hell won. Bon Appetite!

Just West of Mall St. Matthews, it is the shopping center where Wild Oats and Circuit City used to be.

Since you weren't here when they were open, it's a plaza that has the post office, Jason's, Homerun burgers, Feeders supply, etc.

And not all that far from where the OLD SEARS STORE WAS.

I've been buying Tellicherry Peppercorns from Nuts N Stuff for years.
