Restaurant sites in New Albany

by Chad Dowell » Fri Oct 19, 2007 9:44 am

I too was sad to see Bistro New Albany Close it's doors, Great food wonderful atmosphere and great people. As Dave Clancy said in his last post, someone will fill the void very soon. As my father John Dowell happens to be the owner of the building I assure you, there are numerous offers on the table, each one a welcome addition to downtown. If anyone is interested give me a call or call Mike Kopp, also, I have information on two out-parcels in a new development coming on Charlestown Rd. This will be a fabulous site on the fastest growing corridor in New Albany. Give me a call.

Chad, what's up with the Kelsey's site? You can e-mail me privately if you don't want to speak for attribution.

Wow..as an observer(with no money but plenty of good/bad ideas) The Old Kelsey's location would be an obvious location for the NABC...

There's a big issue with the Kelsey's property (roughly 200 yards from NABC) in that it lies on the "wrong" side of the railroad tracks, meaning that when Grant Line Road is shut for much of 2009 to build a bridge over the RR, the Kelsey's side will be accessible only by a convoluted detour. At NABC's current location, we'll still be able to receive traffic from I-265 via University Woods.

As for NABC, we're looking to expand the brewing operation, not "move," because if it isn't broken, no sense in fixing it (where we are now). We're hoping to work with another developer/party to modify and use a space in downtown New Albany for a larger brewery and small taproom with scaled-down food.

As for future prospects at the Kelsey's building, I'd guess that the advent of Applebee's down the street certainly didn't help the previous operator. As we've proven, and as the new La Rosita taqueria is proving now, people will come to our stretch of Grabt Line Road if they're offered something good. Future occupants of the Kelsey's space need to step beyond the model of previous incarnations, or they'll just lose out to the restaurants clustered nearby at the Charlestown Road exurb.

Roger, all I know about Kelsey's is that they have closed and the owner, Jack Koetter, had been trying to sell it for awhile now. I heard that someone has bought the building and plan on opening a new restaurant. I don't know who it is though. On a side note, Jimmy's music will be leaving the New Albany Inn soo which would make a great location for a Bar (Taproom) in the space they occupied. The whole building will be available soon. I do believe they would be willing to sell it also.

Trouble is, there's no room in the New Albany Inn building for a brewery (we've looked).

I just hope that whatever occupies the BNA space doesn't reach the wrong conclusion and go (shall we say) too downmarket; BNA was reaching and serving a prime demographic, but Dave was just terminally undercapitalized.

Sounds like someone would be a fool to take that location, at least not until after 2009's railroad fiasco.

Roger, Dave Clancy was undercapitalized, but I do believe there was more than enough business coming in to support them. I owned that restaurant before Mr. Clancy and I've seen what it takes to make it a success. The suppurt from New Albany was there regardless of what some posts have said, management was the issue. The food was great and they where well on their way to making it a success. It was a shame it ended the way it did.

Their are 3 floors at the New Albany Inn plus the basement and courtyard, I would love to see NABC there but I know Roger knows what he needs. I just wish someone could capitalize on the Grand convention center next door and make a classy restaurant with hotel rooms and suites to accomodate the wedding parties and out of town guests. Such a shame the Holiday Inn and The Hampton get all that buisness.

Chad,

As someone who is also trying to sublet space, I understand your need to "talk up" the area and the space. But I have to take issue with your statement:

management was the issue
.

Hopefully you didn't mean this to come across the way it did to me, because if you meant to suggest on a public site that the market is totally there and that the closure was due to poor management, that was really terribly inappropriate.

If I offended anyone by that statement, I appologize. I can say from my brother being a chef there and my father being the landlord and also a silent partner as well as my sister-in-law being head waitress I do see more than others would. After Dave Himmell (front man) left there where many issues. I've been there and made some of the same mistakes myself. I am in no way saying anything bad about Dave Clancy, only that he is a great chef and not a manager. The business is there for the right establishment!
