In praise of Hammerheads

by Adam C » Tue Dec 20, 2011 3:12 pm

My wife and I have been there twice since this last Friday and this place just knocks me out. I even said it was the best BBQ in the state, maybe the midwest (we can discuss that one..).

I am determined to try everything on the menu now.. from the truffle fries, the smoked mac and cheese (OMG), the fatty, buttery beef brisket and roasted duck sliders, the crispy catfish, the beer selection to the outer worldy mega awesome that is the PBLT sandwich.. It's just very impressive and consistent. Plus, I like the dive bar atmosphere. Could be my favorite place around right now.. Good stuff!

The PBLT is probably my favorite thing on the menu. I've liked everything else I've had there, but I keep coming back to the PBLT.

They have a TV there, I went once to catch a Brent Weedman fight.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

It's been hard for me to not always go for the PBLT. But try the grit cake. Daaaang.

I take visitors there when they're in from out of town, as I think it's one of Louisville's gems. My only consistent complaint in the past was the rudeness of one of their workers, which was bad enough to run a family member off permanently.

It appears to have gotten resolved based on my last two visits, so I wholeheartedly recommend the place to everyone now.

Can anyone confirm if they're open today? I'm assuming so but not sure...

I'm almost positive that they're closed on Mondays.

ok, they are not answering the phone, that's for sure. It does say they're open on Monday on their FB page however.

I've dined at Hammerheads on probably three different Mondays, most recently just a month ago. They just might not be open today since yesterday was Christmas, perhaps.

I think it was because of X Mas.

We recently tried Hammerheads for the first time, and for the most part, we enjoyed it. I always like going to bars with good beer and good food, and so I enjoyed the atmosphere.

We loved the sides. The smoked mac n cheese was awesome and so were the Grippo fries. The fried mushrooms appetizer was also outstanding for any shroom lovers. We will be back for beer and Grippo fries/mac n cheese alone, especially as we have family in Germantown and are frequently in the area.

However, we were both rather unimpressed by our main courses. She got a veggie sloppy joe, that neither one of us cared for and both thought was bland. TO tell the truth, i didn't have very high expectations for a veggie sloppy joe in the first place, and she said she should have ordered something else.

I orderd a half-slab of the baby-back ribs, and I was pretty disappointed, as I have found that I usually am when I order ribs. I had heard many good things about the ribs here, and I thought that they were a little dry, a little overcooked, and way too salty.

I tend not to be judgmental of ribs, as, while I am no expert, it seems that it would be near impossible to consistently turn out perfectly cooked ribs in a restaurant setting. If anybody has any suggestions, I'm open.

But despite the missteps with our main courses, we did like the place, and we will be back. I will probably try a different barbecue dish. I did enjoy their barbecue sauce a great deal, as it had a good spicey/vinegar/unique sweetness(maybe orange juice?) balance going on

Two visits to Hammerheads and this pretty much describes my exact experience/opinion

I guarantee it's near impossible...I've tried the ribs at many (most) of the popular places in town and have pretty much been universally disappointed. Two places that turn out good ribs on a fairly consistent basis are Big R's in LaGrange and Texican's in Crestwood.

Out of curiosity, Steve, have you tried Doc Crow's again since your first visit? Just wondering if they'd gotten any better.
