Adobo Mexican Restaurant.....

by Becky M » Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:15 am

I had to pick up my husband near SECC today and i suggested we have dinner there afterwards... ( i thought it was in the vicinity :? :? :? ) but we ended up going.... he drove. I am guessing this used to be an Our Best Restaurant, i think thats the name. We walked in and were seated right away... there were only about 5-6 other tables there. Personally, i think it was a bit underlit (is that even a word?!).... but that was proably a positive for my 4 yr old, who was the only child with us tonight.

we were served the obligatory chips and salsa right away. and without even tasting i asked for some hotter salsa.... which our server brought out. It was not the typical tomato based like the first one, but it was definitely spicier and i mixed the two up. the first tomato-based salsa i really didnt like.... it had a bit of a canned tomato taste to it, which i know a lot of places do with their salsa. The chips were warm, not hot, but nice and warm.... always nice.

i abhor Pepsi.... so water no-ice for me. boo on no Diet Coke.

there is a lot on the menu, i finally settled on the Chile Colorado 10.49 "sliced skirt steak simmered in Colorado and served with rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, avocado, and tortillas". I didnt know whether to get the beans refried (afraid they would be canned) or charro type (afraid they would be bland). i settled to just get them refried. My plate was huge...... the meat was pretty good (and a good portion, i shared some with my husband) .... and had a good amount of spice but not too much. the beans were tasty, NOT pasty, the lettuce and pico were good, but the pico de gallo did not have any heat to it at all. My only complaint was the rice.... it looked very pretty, but i felt it was bland.... not much flavor to it at all. The nice thing was that they also brought me a bowl of beans. They were very, very good.... really well seasoned and chunky. They were not a charro type bean...... charros have a thin broth and while flavorful, not chunky..... these were thick and hearty... in line with the Puerto-Rican beans i am used to making.

My husband ordered the Cilantro Pesto Burrito with steak.....9.99 "flour tortilla filled with grilled chicken or steak in a cilantro pesto sauce, beans, rice, and more salsa. served with rice, lettuce, pico de gallo and avocado." Again a good portion on his burrito. The steak it was filled with was seasoned pretty good too.... and there was a good amount of meat, not all filler. The only disappointment with his was the cilantro pesto. I was really envisioning a thick pesto like sauce, but it was more like a thin sour cream/crema based sauce with some cilantro whizzed in it to make it a light, yucky green and it had absolutely no cilantro flavor. It took me back to my itty-bitty baby diaper-changing days, sorry to say. If the burrito did not have this sauce on it i think it would have been wayyy more appetizing.

My son wanted the usual burger with pickles, ketchup, and fries. 4.99 The children's meal comes with main, side, drink, and a small bowl of ice cream. My heart stopped when the manager came over to tell me that they had run out of burger meat for the night and what else would he like. he was very apologetic and said that he hoped we could still enjoy our meal even though it was not going to be what we wanted. Oh man..... change is NOT good for this boy! i had been coaching and prepping him for the past hour and half that he was going to be eating his "usual" meal but in a new different place, "change is good" "this is learning" "we are doing this together" etc, etc. my son was not open to anything else i was suggesting, so i just told the manager that the chicken strips would be ok. i think he honestly felt bad when he saw my son with his eyes tightlly closed, shaking his head, and not talking, but i told him that it was ok and it was a little harder for my son to change something so quickly. he said he understood, and though he was not the manager he was going to take my sons meal off of the ticket. i began to say oh thats ok, he will still try to eat it, and he said, oh no i want you to feel comfortable as if you are at home and enjoy your meal.

his chicken was actually pretty good.... it was real chicken that was breaded in house. and not a thick floury batter, but a light, maybe cornmeal based batter. his fries were prefrozen though, the type that are seasoned, not spicy though. His chicken was so good that i would enjoy it on a salad. the little bowl of vanilla ice cream was perfect too. just enough.

overall i think it was good and i would return.........

jeez.... i just realized... i talk a lot.

I wish this place was good or unique but it just isn't. It seems to have reached a bad rep in record time in Fern Creek (which is hard to do), uninspired food thrives out here and it delivers less than that at a higher price point.

Unfortunately, they probably wont make it a year, high overhead and low sales is a bad equation.

I've eaten there as have friends as well as consistently bad online reviews.

Oh what I ate there, I don't even remember, my mom and I ate there this summer and were both disappointed. And we are not very hard to please.

I gathered you had eaten there, but just interested in what you dislike so much about it.

We have friends in Fern Creek who have good palates (they do the Frankfort and Bardstown Road scene a lot), and they think well of Adobo and consider it their second restaurant home. They do know and like Mexican food, so maybe it's just a matter of expectations.

We have eaten at Adobo as well and had a decent experience. It is at the very least serviceable. PLUS, you can enjoy a cone or piece of pie at The Pie Kitchen afterwards...nothing wrong with that!

If it's a spot that's on par with Bardstown and Frankfort restaurant row eateries, you'd think the local food critics would be rushing out to Fern Creek to get the scoop on this diamond in the rough to break the news, could even be on par with Sake Blue, that's a story that's too good to be passed up in the Creek.

I guess I'll wait and read until the story breaks. . .

I'd say it's more on par with Sol Aztecas on Frankfort.

Oh sorry, I guess I was confused. For a spot to be a "second restaurant home" to an experienced foodie and a general reference to restaurant rows I guess I was mislead into hoping this spot could be a destination.

After all, it's a a mile from me, why wouldn't I want a great restaurant so close by?

Maybe you just want to hush all the good reviews so you can keep Adobo all for your self? :P

No, it's average at best. I drum up all of the good news I can for good places out here so they will survive.

I do believe I was the first person to report back with great reviews of Dakshin, Los Gorditas and Bosna Mak to name a few. Always been a fan of Sake Blue. My palate likes to be discounted but my posts speak for themselves.
