Basa - Anyone been lately?

by Robin F. » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:41 pm

We're going next week and since it's been awhile, I wondered if anyone had any recommendations on the food (or drinks)?

Their bacon manhattan drink is very interesting and worth tasting - you may or may not like it, but definitely worth trying!

And, my recommended ordering technique still stands:

1. Order any/all specials

2. If no specials, or if they dontt appeal to you, close your eyes and randomly point. You'll get a different dish, and it will be great.

I whole heartedly agree with Andrew's assessment! I've never had any of the menu because the specials always sound so interesting! Enjoy!

Sit at the bar - order randomly from the new small plates and cocktail menus - eat, drink and repeat.

The mussels are the best I've ever had, the fried oysters are awesome, so are the s&p shrimp. Just order anything and you will be happy.

We've been 3 or 4 times over the past few months and are thinking about going tonight.

Yeah, the specials are usually great. All the cocktails we've had there are good, but I can't remember what they were.

Some recent/perennial specials that I would order again:
-fried oyster salad
-anything with softshell crab
-split pea soup

And the claypot catfish dish is a transcendent experience in both good and bad ways. Like an intense psychedelic trip, it's probably something that everyone should experience once in their lives.

The Basa Signature Martini must be tried. Vodka martini with a chunk of aloe vera in it. Like nothing else.

The eggplant dish (on the menu) is in my top 3 list of vegetarian dishes in town.

Had dinner with 4 others last night. The mussels still rank tops in Louisville. The soft shell crab was enjoyed by two others. However, the highlight was the server.
All specials announced without any notes and all 5 orders taken without a note. All delivered correctly.
Service and food are always tops here.

I'm right there with Blake regarding the claypot catfish. One of my all time favorite dishes in Louisville. THE perfect cold weather dish.
Damn! Now I want it to get cold.

For anyone else heades that way try the Basa signature cocktail or my favorite, the spicy Bombay Heat (not sure if it is still on the menu, but they make it).

Also for those that are not big fish eaters - Basa has one of the best filets in town, but it is a special.

It's still on the menu, had one last night. I paired it with the mussels, s&p prawns, and imperial rolls. I left very happy.

I was also there last night for dinner. We came late and sat at the bar. I would probably have to say that this is one of, if not the most, consistently outstanding dining options in town. It doesn't hurt that it is only a 3 block trek from my front door either. I always order the Last Word to drink, which if anyone likes gin, you need to try this one. Last night they made me a variation of the drink with rye whiskey which was also very good. We have always enjoyed the mussels, calamari, grilled marinated beef skewers, pork cheeks, catfish, tofu, and eggplant. Having tried just about everything on the menu, those are the favorites for us, but everything is great. I will also echo the sentiment that you cannot go wrong in ordering the specials every time.
