Westport General Store on the auction block

by Robin Garr » Fri Mar 16, 2007 10:51 pm

<table border="0" align="left" width="310"><tr><td><img src="http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/westport_front.jpg" border="1" align="left"></td></tr></table>Westport General Store is up for sale and will go on the auction block on April 11, proprietor Will Crawford said this week.

Crawford, who purchased a historic house and the old general store in tiny Westport on the River north of LaGrange in Oldham County and reopened the store as a restaurant 3 1/2 years ago, attributed the sale to family reasons - including a desire to spend more time with his two young children than the heavy demands on an independent restaurateur permit.

He called the move "bittersweet," and said the restaurant remains a thriving business and will continue in operation until the sale and closing, meaning that it will most likely continue under his management through Derby season.

The general store building, the business itself, and the largely renovated historic home, built in 1838, will be auctioned separately, he said; it's possible that one buyer could bid successfully for all three lots, or they could be divided. It's even possible, he said speculatively, that he could sell the business but retain ownership of the building, in essense becoming the new restaurant operator's landlord.

Westport General Store on the auction block

What an opportunity. If 24 years in the food service biz hadn't just totally worn me out, I would definitely be looking at this offer. I love the locale, I am sure a built in clientele would be in place and the challenges would be quite rewarding, IMHO. Will, good luck and here's to a good future for you and your family. Enjoy. :D
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Willie- I hate to see this but I'm very glad that you have your priorities straight. I know that you were killing yourself trying to run that place and I know it wore heavily on you to be away from your family. I also know that, in spite of Robert's doom and gloom perspective, that location, though challenging, has been, and will be a huge success. The East End is rapidly moving closer to Westport and that sleepy little town is about to explode (much like New Albany). The person who buys that property will be sitting on a gold mine and though it produces a few nuggets now, the main vein is just inches away. Good luck to ya lad and keep in touch!-Dave

Wow--I think I'd be tempted by the space if I were still in town...Good luck, will...I am letting a few friends know about the auction...who knows.

It is my plan to keep the restaurant open until a new owner takes possession. The Auction is taking place during the beginning of our busy season (April - Oct). The new owner will enjoy the benefit of the park at the river being redesigned and new boat docks being added which will enable large boats (30-50ft) to dock and walk the short distance to the restaurant. A new development has been approved by the river (20 upscale houses) so all in all the new folks should have a good leg up. I encourage you all to continue to patronize the Westport General Store. As Dave C has pointed out the gold is here for the taking. So come out April 11th and bring your checkbook.
Thanks

Will

The way that area keeps growing, and largely with affluent developements, I think that the store is in an excellent location.
