Rocky’s Sub Pub interactive ‘beer tablet’

by Mark R. » Mon Dec 05, 2011 7:37 pm

Technology has finally entered Beer Pubs! Tablet computers are now being used to help you make an informed decision regarding which type of beer to have. The best part is it's right here in Louisville! It will be interesting to see how fast this trend expands.

Here's the article: Sub Pub Interactive

Really Steve, why is this laughable? You and I and people who have spent years seeking out and enjoying good beer hardly need an app for that. However, many of the people I drink with have not put in the time required to be knowledgeable about the vast variety of beers available and are frequently intimidated by a large beer list (Rocky's has 32 I think). Let's face it, how many times have you heard a server grossly misrepresent a beer to someone.

I think this will appeal to people who are "smart phone" addicts and who might like to order a craft beer but are just not sure what to order. It will also prevent them from ordering a beer based on an inaccurate description given them by their server.

I'm with Mark on this one. I think anything that assists people in ordering craft beer is a good thing.

It just seems like a really detailed menu to me. I have nothing against it, actually like the idea and think it could catch on. I hate outdated beer menus and asking questions that the bartenders might not know the answer to. This puts all the beer info at the consumers disposal instantly.

This very device could have helped me tonight. I ran in to Whole Foods to grab a few groceries, headed to the draft beer counter, and pondered my decision. Brooklyn "The Companion" Ale, what the hell is that, I wondered? It's a wheat beer from Brooklyn Brewing Co., the lady replied.

I'll take one, I kind of like wheat beers. Well, I didn't really like it and it wasn't really a "wheat beer". It is a wheat wine and was around 10% ABV. If I could have looked at a menu with all the details, I would have chosen more wisely.

Not only is Rocky's inside of the Watterson, it is on the other side of the creek, so doesn't apply to Steve P.

Steve,

You can only pull half of my man card, then fight my wife for the other half.

Come on Daddio, Justin and I don't need tablets to order a beer. It may prove helpful to those who are not yet card carrying members of the craft beer lover's club. You recently proclaimed your love for craft beer by going on a beer-cation and I bet you are frequently asked to advise your friends on beer when you're at a restaurant. Not your beer buddies but others who don't have your knowledge. You've probably also seen your friends make a mistake in ordering and knew you'd just have to let them make it as the server has convinced them that they would like it and there was no diplomatic way for you to intervene. You're not always there to advise them in any case.

Now, that's all I'm going to say on this matter but if it's not past your bedtime, come on over to the Fireside Bar and Grill on Wed between 5:00 and 10:00pm. They are having an event with Upland and the beer will be $3 a pour. It would be my pleasure to buy your first one. I would love to hear some stories about the adventures of the Rolling Bones bbq tour in person. I'm a big fan of your bbq! Cheers StevieP!

<Huge painful sigh> Ya'll can rationalize this all ya want to...and I'll admit that some of your arguments might make a lot of sense to women...but the fact of the matter remains, real men won't walk into a bar and fire up an "App" to decide what beer they are going to drink...Least ways they don't out here in Garage Logic or other parts of the planet I frequent. Yeah, I'm thinking Mr Beer App Thingie Beer Man is going to be the next "Real Men of Genius" hit for AB, right up there with Mr. Tiny Thong Bikini Wearer, Mr Rolling Cooler Cooler Roller and (my favorite) Mr. Really Loud Cell Phone Talker.

Education is a cornerstone of the Craft Beer movement, whether its about a beer style or the brewery that brewed it. I commend Rocky's for taking their beer program to the next level and making the education of their customers a priority. I know a lot of people put their time, energy and passion for Craft Beer into making the app. They deserve their due credit. They don't deserve to be mocked for it.

Not everyone will want to use the app. Not everyone will NEED to use the app. But, for those who are interested, its a very in-depth resource. I know a lot about beer, and still found the it enjoyable and informative. If that makes me less of a man, then so be it...

Steve you're sounding like one of those guys that would rather drive around in circles before he stops and asks directions. I've probably got 500 breweries and thousands of beers within 200 miles of my house. If I don't have some kind of encyclopedic knowledge of all of them I'm not sure how that reflects on my manhood. I'll take all the help I can get!

The cornerstone of any travel I undertake is a Good Beer Guide, be it print or digital. As Justin pointed out, I'd rather know than take a bartenders word for anything beer related.

I know a lot about beer. I currently carry a man card. I will use this app. do i need this app to make a beer selection. of course not. i'm more interested in being entertained while i wait for my food and grub, and entertainment is what this buisiness is all about, last time i checked.
