Wild Egg misstep

by Ellen P » Sun Dec 04, 2011 2:08 pm

I love the calamity benedict. Cannot eat other egg bennies now. Passed up Verbenas to go to Wild Eggs and Paul's. Mike dropped me off at WE while he went on to Paul's and came back. Yes, we went to some trouble. I guess that was what partly annoyed me.
Prepaid and pretipped.
Didn't check all my containers. My mistake or is it? I learned a lesson.
Got home and one of sides is wrong.
Seems minor but darn it and I pretipped. 3 on 17.99.
Called, yes I know it's a busy time. The manager said something like what do you want us to do for you? Shouldn't businesses have a set response for certain situations?
Okay, so I have to decide...take my tip off the credit card.
So what is your name and what kind of credit card. Give it to me exactly. So what is it Amex or Visa.
That's when I hung up.
I'm mad at myself for not opening up all 4 containers. I saw that the two entrees were correct (she kept saying burrito and we had an omelet so that was correct.) She made a point of saying here's the ketchup for your potatoes - which I didn't get.
It's the principal of the thing. First time to get food to go anywhere. We usually eat a bite then get the remainder to go. I should have done that. We were trying to save time and be at home.
And since it wasn't the whole order, I wasn't going to demand something outrageous. Email me a certificate for a free muffin or something. Or be nice. But since he didn't take the be nice route I hung up.
I'm calming down now. Going to watch/listen to the UofL women play/beat uk and decorate our Xmas trees.

+1 Not so much about the order but because of the questions related to the refund of the tip. Those questions were certainly are required to get it corrected it correctly.

Thanks for the generous responses, guys. It's nice to know people are going to be treated kindly when they're upset about something and post it here. Or at least it would be nice to know that.

Mark, youre right that those questions are required for her refund, but it is all about the execution. It sounds as if the manager was not being courteous about giving her the refund.

same thing happened to me a while back when i picked up some lunch for my husband and i at a local fish place. It was during his lunch break so i didnt check the whole thing, noticed the fish said ok good to go to myself. when i parked and was handing out food for my husband and myself, noticed we didnt have any bread, (they were fish sandwiches mind you), sides were wrong. i called and got the, what do you want us to do response, i repeated well, the order was wrong. i forgot his response after that cuz it was definitely rude, i just hung up and havent returned.

Ellen.... i dont think you were on a short fuse or overreacting. i have a feeling the tone of the conversation wasnt very pleasant from his end.l

I have wondered whether putting the customer on the spot with the irritated-sounding, "Well, what do you want me to do?" routine is a strategy for having to do less because most customers will be made uncomfortable and won't make much of a request. Next time, turn it around and ask what is standard for that restaurant in a situation where an order is fulfilled incorrectly. It shouldn't be up to the customer to decide what should be done, IMO...the ball is in the court of the restaurant at that point and there should at least be an apology if nothing more.

I certainly agree with this but she already admitted it was during the time of day when they're really slammed :!: Probably if she had called back later things would've been much different. Also we don't know what her tone of voice (attitude) was when calling back.

I think making this statement if you were in the restaurant would be putting you on the spot. However in this case she was already home so it wasn't as if he could have just replaced the incorrect item.

I really think our responses were how they were because of the circumstances. Obviously the time of day was part of that but also the fact that she really didn't give them much of a chance to correct the problem.

I used to work in phone customer service, and if I ever asked a customer who was displeased, "Well what do you want me to do?", in a rushed or annoyed tone, I would have been fired. Even on the phone, good customer service is paramount, and when a mistake is made, it starts with an apology.

"I'm sorry that your order was incorrect -- how can we make this right for you?" would be a better way to ask.

Sometimes its too hard to resist being snarky on the internet.

Still, from the title I was expecting to read that the OP took their whole family there for breakfast and the food was cold, or the order took an hour or something bigger than the restaurant put a wrong side item in the to-go order. Obviously someone took the order wrong since they read back to her that there were potatoes and she knew she didn't order potatoes but didn't speak up at the time. That is an honest mistake not carelessness.

I mean I just don't think you ding a good restaurant on a public forum because they got one side item wrong. It happens. Anywhere.

I hope the original poster comes back, because my perception is that she was more concerned about the brusqueness of the manager than she was about the error on the side item. Maybe I'm misreading... And she did title this thread "Misstep" rather than "Calamity".
