One Hot Tamale

by Deb Hall » Sun Dec 04, 2011 12:18 pm

Based on the raves from here, I'm contemplating getting some tamales as part of a Xmas present for a serious tamale lover in my family. Any recommends on which flavors from those who have tried them? She likes things spicy.

Thanks!

I've only had the poblano, but Susan can tell you what's spicy. I know she has some that have a kick.

I didn't find any of the sampler spicy hot, no wet brow. Flavorful spice.

I just picked a mixed four dozen spicy. I placed an order through the One Hot Tamale Facebook page this morning and picked up at cooking at the cottage this afternoon. Full report to follow...

David,
Any verdict on favorites? I think I'm placing an order tomorrow.

Were yours frozen?

Yes, both orders were frozen. They steam up really fast (or nukerowave). I haven't eaten any of this round yet but intend to tomorrow. I had pork and beef last Saturday and both were excellent.

try to invest the 15 minutes required to steam them. Excellent outcome. It's easy to overnuke them.

One of my life-long guilty pleasures has been canned tamales, Hormel(?), reserved for a once a year grease out. Tumbleweed once offered a better alternative, but I haven't been in years.

One Hot Tamale is neither of those. I think these tamales are something special, authentic and they are all winners.

If I had to pick an order:
Spicy Beef and the Chorizo jalapeño are at the top followed by poblano then the spicy pork. That's two first place and two second.

I'm interested in hearing Deb's review!

Agree. 20 minutes from cold water to my plate and steam is traditional.

David,

Thanks so much for the timely input- I'm heading over there this afternoon and will definitely keep your recommendations with me.

Regarding a review- I was planning on gifting these- not eating them myself. But since you insist on a review , I guess I must... ( I hate it when that happens... :D ).

So I'm probably missing the obvious, but where can you get these tamales? I searched and all... :D

Louisville Farmer's Market, second floor at Oxmoor, Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons (noon - 5) thru the middle of January. Or place an order through the OHT Facebook page and pickup at Cooking at the Cottage in the Vogue Center.
