Derby City Espresso closing for good December 9

by Matthew Landan » Wed Nov 30, 2011 7:58 pm

Hi there everyone,
just wanted to let you all know that I will be closing Derby City Espresso on December 9th. DCE has been a blast hosting more than 500 shows and working with more than 1000 bands, plus all the great espresso and beers that have been drank in this room.

It's been a great run of more than four and a half years, but I have decided to get out of the coffee business (for the time being). I hope to see as many of my friends and acquaintances as possible before I depart for Italy... stop in DCE will be open and hosting music tonight, and the 1,2,3,6,7, and 8th of December.

Thanks for all the support over the years.

This isn't goodbye this is just the moment before we say hello all over again.

To be continued...

Have fun, Matthew!

So when are you coming home? Didn't you get a license today?! (Hope it's okay to ask, I just read it on the DCE fan page).

I'll be home in January in time to start the new semester at UofL. I'm finishing my Masters there in the spring. I'm getting every license I can lay my hands on!

You might be there to witness the collapse of the Euro. Take plenty of cash, in Dollars. You can't rely on credit cards or ATMs for money in that situation.

Have fun! And good luck!

Mathew, not sure why you're heading off to Bayreuth, though I'm sure they'll have a wonderful WeinachtsFest, but, while there, find a afternoon and schlep about 15 miles over to Kulmbach to try what is arguably some of the world's very best lager!! Goes down great with currywurst & kartoffelsalat!

That would be kind of awesome because I was there for the birth of te Euro. When I was living in Turin, I actually had to hand all my lira into the banks and exchange them for Euros! But honestly I don't think the Euro is going to collapse. It is possible that Greece will default and remove itself from the Euro but... even that looks unlikely to me.

Yes I still hold the lease on 331 E. Market St. I'm closing DCE but not finished with the room.
I really don't want to say much right now about what my future plans are but I will be in just a few short weeks.

Roger, I've never been to Bamberg, what's so cool about it? I have an American expat friend who married a nice Germany Frau a number of years back and they are renting a house in Bayruth for Xmas and I'm gonna visit them for the holiday before heading to Berlin to visit another old friend up there and partying like it's 1999 for NYE 2012.

Before moving to Louisville I lived in Italy and Germany each for about 2 years working as a translator/PR guy for companies like Telecom Italia Lab, Deutsche Telekom and Opel Autos. I haven't been back to visit friends in 7 years.

This is DCE's final schedule.

Tomorrow for first Friday we have the rock bands Deer Meet and Turf War plus the Blackout Band and Lil Cheezers will be parked outside the shop.

Saturday Dec 3 we have singer songwriter Benjamin Logan Knight + Met City + folk rock act An Old Friend

Next Tuesday we have the Louisville gypsy Jazz Jam (same folks who put on the recent Djangofest at Bellerman last month)

Wednesday December 7 we have the eighth installment of The Word Spoken – The city’s premiere underground spoken word poetry slam and open mic.

Thursday December 8 is the closing party with music by Babyfishmouth, Yo Majesty & The Erascists + The Half Mile Millionaires.

We’re gonna have some great specials and we now serve wine and liquor by the drink as well! Coffee, teas, bourbon, wine and craft beers all in one spot! For one week only!
