Fish Phone

by Deb Hall » Thu Oct 11, 2007 11:27 am

Thought this was a great idea- it comes from Gourmet's Ruth Reichel:

You're in a restaurant that you trust, perusing the menu, and you notice that they're serving monkfish. But wait, isn't monkfish problematic? Has something changed? You wish there were some way to check quickly before you order. Well, now there is. Pull out your phone and text Blue Ocean Institute's new Fishphone at 30644 with the word fish and the name of the fish you want to know about. A few seconds later, you get your answer. What do they have to say about monkfish? "Some environmental concerns." Not into texting? Fishphone.org will get you the same information. —Ruth Reichl

Good resource, Deb!

Another way to access the info (I noticed some bugs in the online search) is to download the full two-sided card in a colorful PDF format.

Hey, that's nifty! I also really like the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch.

Did anyone else get amusing mental images from the term "Fish phone"?

Like whether it's endangered or over-fished?

Maybe for fruits & vegetables, we need a service to let you know how many miles it's travelled and/or whether it's local...They'd call it :

Banana Phone

(Those with children will get this one)
