Masa

by Mary Anne » Fri Nov 25, 2011 4:58 pm

I'm a little suprised no one has posted about Masa Japanese Bistro and Sushi in Middletown. I went there today for lunch with a friend and it was quite good. She had the Salmon Teriyaki, I had the Masa Ramen, both were excellent and the chef sent out a cucumber salad that was delish.
http://www.masasushibar.com We were the only people in the place at 12, one person came in as we were packing up. Definitely worth a try, next time I'm having the sushi. Their Facebook page has some great pics of the food.

I guess it has flown under the radar, Mary Anne! Thanks for posting. :)

It is just out from Rumors? Wonder how long they've been there and what used to be in that space.

Looks like it got a "soft opening" in the forum, but somewhat hidden within a broader discussion of sushi bars:

Yes that's the one just out from Rumors on the opposite side of the road between Feeders Supply and Ken Towery. We haven't tried it yet but it's been open about a month. I forget what was in that location before but it wasn't a restaurant.

We have been twice. Once for dinner and today for lunch. The place is beautifully decorated. They obviously used a professional company to create their logo and menus as well as decor. The rolls are beautifully done, fish is fresh (though no uni) and some really interesting appetizers especially different are the Japanese hotdogs! For dinner we tried their deep fried avocado appetizer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Steer clear of the teriyaki and tonkatsu dishes for lunch. Bland flavors with previously frozen sauteed vegetables and an uninspired fried rice. If you stick with the rolls, fish, and appetizers you will be delighted.

PS any one know the name of the design firm that helped Garage Bar with their look? I thought they did an amazing job branding that concept.

Masa is fantastic. Been there three times, and the quality of the product is fantastic. John is doing really creative things with sushi. I'd dare to say it might just be the best in the city - definitely as good as Asahi. And they are in Middletown!
