Secret menus, off-menu items at fast food restaurants?

by Robin Garr » Mon Nov 21, 2011 11:53 pm

This doesn't seem likely, but the blog post is fascinating. Who's up for hitting a few fast-food joints to give it a try?

24 Secret Restaurant Menus Revealed

Mention "secret menus" and many people think of hidden functions on Blackberries or Xbox games. Actually, secret menus refers to items you can special order at restaurants that aren't mentioned on standard menus.

Some places, like Chipotle Mexican Grills, have a whole secret menu that's limited only by your imagination. On the other hand, In-N-Out Burger's secret menu" is so unsecret it's posted on their Web site. Kind of takes the cool factor out of having the inside scoop, doesn't it?

If you're looking to impress a date or just like that feeling of "knowing the chef," here are 24 restaurants that offer secret menus. Remember, not all may participate in the hidden menu. However, if you try to order something and the server looks at you with a blank look, don't give up. Describe the dish and usually they'll make it for you anyway.

When dinosaurs roamed the earth and I worked at McDonalds, we made tacos by chopping up a hamburger patty some onions and a tomato, and shredded lettuce then we would get a bottom bun and squash it to make the taco. We had to bring the hot sauce from home.
We also used to play broom hockey in the back using a frozen filet of fish patty, when it thawed out we had to go to the freezer for a new one, which lent new meaning to the term .."icing the puck".

When Livejournal was all the rage there were several communities on there dedicated to employees of restaurant chains posting their recipes for non menu items using what was in the kitchen. The McDonald's one featured cakes amongst other items not unlike that taco.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

Although I've never ordered one, I hear that they will make you a McNasty if you order it. That consists of a McChicken patty jammed in between a Double Cheeseburger. They will also make you a Baby Mac which is a Double Cheeseburger minus ketchup and mustard with Big Mac sauce instead.
I have also ordered (back when I ate that crap) Quarter Pounders with Cheese plain, add Tarter Sauce.

In-N-Out Burger has a secret menu or so I understand. Apparently there are some items you can order that are "off menu".

Yes, that's true, and the so-called off-menu is actually posted on the wall. I believe that's mentioned in the linked article, Mark.

I order "plain double cheeseburger, add Mac Sauce" all the time...

Dan,

I've heard the other sandwich you describe called the "McGangbang". Google reveals it's got quite a cult following...

One of my favorite things to order is a McGriddle and ask for the Southern Style Chicken. Taste is very similar to chicken and waffles. Anyone feeling adventuress should give it a go.

Annemarie - I know you didn't mention fries, but McDonald's fries in the U.S. also have beef fat in them for whatever reason. They don't in other countries. Just a heads up for your vegetarian if she is still a fan of McDonald's ;)

Didn't they discontinue that practice after lawsuits from Hindus?

As far as I know, they still use it in the U.S., but not in other countries.

The ingredients list, as pulled from the McDonald's site just now:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness). Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.

CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK. *(Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

We used to use Beef Tallow back in the 70's.. I remember having to filter the stuff through this Electrolux contraption that would burn you every time..

It got so alot of people would. The McD's here in Etown and the ones in Bowling Green (I know cause of going to the college) began charging 50 cents for the sauce and had a big sign posted for a while saying that the Mac Sauce was a specialty item.
