Country comfort food on a Sunday afternoon - suggestions?

by Jackie R. » Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:08 am

I'm taking my dad out for his birthday today, and he's in the mood for country comfort food (he specifically mentioned meatloaf). This is not my field of expertise! Help?

It's not really "country" but the meatloaf at Lynn's Paradise Cafe is seriously good. Complement it with sides like limas, green beans or mac and cheese (my favorite).

Cottage Inn.

Don't think they have meat loaf, but Eiderdown offers many plates that might be considered upscale comfort food. I had a short rib beef stew last time I was there. Seemed like comfort food to me.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Goose Creek Diner. Excellent meatloaf, fried green tomatoes and other comfort food in a comfortable setting.

Ed,

Thanks for remembering the place I couldn't remember when I was posting. I had three in mind but only two made it to the page. GCD is a great suggestion.

That would definitely be my choice! Another plus is it's not a long drive. Of course if you were looking for more of a destination place for this kind of food you could always drive to Glendale where you have the Depot and Whistle Stop restaurants!

I think The Depot is long gone but the Whistle Stop is going strong.

The Whistle Stop is the one we always go to and I know there is another one, I thought it was the Depot but it may be something else.

Thanks for quick responses, guys. I gave dad the choice between these suggestions, and as soon I mentioned Lynn's he perked up and said he'd had her "mom's recipe" meatloaf before and declared it "primo - best in the city!". It's his birthday, so he gets to be the authority on all things. He's also a sucker for kitchy decor - he's really the tackiest decorator I know.

Fyi, if you tell your server it's your birthday at Lynne's, they announce it to the room and everyone sings happy birthday. We were really glad we found this out from another birthday in the room before telling our server it was my dad's birthday.

Jackie there is also this place in Shively called Franco's http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/51/1413911/ ... Louisville
I haven't been yet but my brother has been raving about it. We're supposed to go for lunch tomorrow. It's more of a "steamtable" comfort/soul-food place like the old Jay's cafeteria so I am thinking Meatloaf is probably on the menu at half the price of Lynns $12.00 meatloaf.
But hey, it is Dad's birthday so it's up to you.

It's Tony York's on Main. We haven't been even though it's really close to us. I hear it is rather expensive, but good.
