Good restaurants in Middletown?

by Jason G » Fri Nov 18, 2011 4:56 pm

Are there any good restaurants in middletown? All I can think of is Marks feed store, Havana Rumba and Wild Eggs. We've lived out there for a year now but it seems like we're always going out of the way for a good meal. Maybe there are some off the beaten path (shelbyville road) I'm not thinking of or don't know about.

Some weve seen but have never tried...Rumors, Peking City Bistro.

Some we've tried but found "meh" - Lemongrass, Fat Jimmys.

Peking City Bistro is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chef Chen is Sichuanese, with some serious chops in the old country, and he was at the old Peking City in Springhurst before. We did a forum offline there last year. Seriously excellent Chinese, particularly if you enjoy ordering authentic dishes from the Chinese menu (which is available to Westerners in English).

Just on the other side of the Gene Snyder is Jasmine http://www.jasminelouisville.com/index.html
which specializes in Szechwan cusine (Chef Lin's home is the capital of Sichuan.) but also serves excellent versions of Chinese-American classics. I prefer the "heat" of the authentic Szechwan. My favorite is Cumin Fish, which I am not sure is on the menu but he always willingly cooks it for me. (Cumin Chicken is also an option.) Their soup pots and clay po9ts are killers. Last, but not least, I'm in love with their verison of Dan Dan noodles.

Also note that it is an easy stretch over to the village of Anchorage where you can find Selena's and the Anchorage Cafe.

Selena's is basically in Middletown, just outside the Anchorage City limits on LaGrange rd and the Anchorage Café and the Village Anchor are both in downtown Anchorage. Just as close as any of the others to Middletown.

That Fat Jimmy's near Lake Forest was actually purchased by one of the employees who changed the name. That happened well after the Fat Jimmy's in Middletown Plaza opened, it's been open for over three years now.

Rumors is good if you want bar type food. Wings, burgers and above average steamed/raw items (oysters etc.). Sandwiches and what not are good. Service is fast and friendly. I prefer their wings to the BW3 down the road.

Home Run Burger in front of Wal-Mart is excellent. Skip McDonalds and Burger King and go there.

Liu's Garden used to have above average Chinese food. Haven't been in a while. It's right across from Lemongrass as is The Fishery which has great fried fish (> Moby Dick). There's a Wick's Pizza in front of Kroger which is good. There are also several small sandwich shops which provide outstanding food. The Cheddar Box Cafe, Cottage Cafe (great deserts) and Alley Cat Cafe all make excellent lunch fare. I don't think any are open for dinner. El Torro (by Fresh Market) is the best of the tex-mex places, but there is also an Ernesto's and an El Nopal if you prefer those.

A quick trip west on Shelbyville Road will net you a Bristol Bar and Grill, Limestone, Bonefish Grill, Brownie's The Shed, SmashBurger and a variety of quicky places in that kind of not yet St. Matthews but also not still Middletown section there. PF Chang's if you're into it.

I grew up in Middletown and still work near by so I keep pretty up to date on eats. Plenty of good options no matter what your preference or budget.
