German-style bräuhaus/restaurant

by Mark R. » Fri Nov 11, 2011 9:25 pm

So much for any ideas of having a retail establishment going in to the old Borders location!

German-style bräuhaus/restaurant coming to Fourth Street Live

At least I was hoping they would have a German beer house menu but looking at it it's just a standard issue chain menu with nothing unusual. Not even a soft pretzel!

A Brazilian churascarria (sp?) would have been cool too.. might be the only thing that would make me think of going to 4th St.

It would've been great and certainly nice addition to the area. I certainly agree about going down there!

I'm...totally missing how this is German-style. Am I the only one? The menu is strangely reminiscent of BJ's (and don't get me wrong, I enjoy BJ's, but I've never thought of it as a "brauhaus".) I looked at the menu for Columbus, OH - wondering if the others are different?

I'm thinkin' Mark (or more accurately Insider-Louisville) might have let the somewhat Germanic sounding name lead them to the assumption that this restaurant was something it's not. Looking over their menu and website I don't think "brauhaus" is the concept they are shooting for. Quality-wise I checked out several of the Gordon - Biersch locations on Urbanspoon and overall they seem to be rated quite high (mid to upper "80's" for the most part). The menu I checked out actually looks quite appealing and given that I don't count myself among those who sport a perpetual "tude" for all things "Cordish", I'm looking forward to giving the place a try.

BTW, the "parent" company of Gordon - Biersch are the same folks who bring us Old Chicago Pizza and Rock Bottom Brewery. More significant (to me) is that they are also the parent company to Big River Grille and Blue Water Grille, two of my favorite Chattanooga restaurants. The also have several other "concept" restaurants that look kinda fun, a full list can be found here:

Gordon Biersch is in no way German style. You are right, it is more along the lines of BJ's. Someone else mentioned Rock Bottom, more along those lines as well. Their beers are pretty good, or used to be anyway. We used to eat / drink at the one in Phoenix in the ASU / Sun Devil Stadium area whenever we'd go out to visit my in-laws. It will be worth checking out if they are still like they were ten years ago.

I've been to the Gordon Biersch in Columbus OH a few times. The term "German style" can certainly be applied to their beers. They all tend to be lager/pilsner/wheat types. The food, while not bad, is not all that different from any other chain restaurant, and as such, they're a perfect fit for 4tth St Live. BJ's, at least, has a wider variety of beers. And if you're going to drink beer downtown, you'd be better off going to Against the Grain or the BBC.

Here's another article regarding this restaurant. Looks like Cordish is going to ask metro government for money on this project also and metro governments seems very sensitive about it!

Ehhhhh....the writer's an ass-hat. This article wasn't about Cordish and it certainly wasn't about Gordon Biersch. It was about the opportunity to grind an axe:

..."Poynter is a former Courier-Journal reporter who makes certain his newspaper colleagues are well fed and tended by Mayor Greg Fischer’s publicity machine. In return, his friends promise to never, ever publish anything that might upset that delicate relationship, which guarantees them the news releases first."...

The guys just pissed because he (and/or his publication) apparently don't get the time of day from the Mayor's office.

Gordon-Biersch was my first microbrewery, so I'll always remember it fondly. Who doesn't always remember their first?

That said, it was when I was in college at San Jose State in the late 80's. I thought it was very good then, but they only had locations in Palo Alto and San Jose at that point. I'll certainly be happy to try it again when they open here, but it won't replace AtG, BBC or Cumberland.

Yep, Gordon Biersch does German-style beers.

Yep, it's similar to the BJ's (yawn) theme overall in terms of eatery character.

Nope, there's no reason to give a rat's you know what about another carpetbagging brewery in the super duper subsidized Cordish space.

I echo the refrain mentioned earlier: ATG and BBC are downtown. Drink and eat with them. Often.

Thank you.

Your locally owned and operated Louisville independent breweries surely are appreciative. Death to chains! :D
