Help! Need Suggestions for a Cozy Pub

by Terri Beam » Sat Oct 29, 2011 12:20 pm

A new friend from over in Lexington is coming to visit me tomorrow, and he suggested that he would like me to take him to a "cozy, reasonably quiet pub." I'm not much of a pub crawler, so I have no clue. I'll be doing some research online, but finding somewhere that is cozy and quiet (and naturally OPEN) on a Sunday around lunchtime will be a challenge. Price range should be in the "reasonable" range.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Not really a pub but Coals is open at lunchtime, they have a very nice atmosphere are relatively quiet and have some great food at a reasonable price. BBC would also be a choice as would Against the Grain (but I'm not sure if they are open at lunch or not, call first).

Thanks, Mark.

I'm also curious about Village Anchor. Would reservations be recommended on a Sunday around 12:30 to 1 pm?

The Troll Pub is cosy and I enjoyed their food. It's got some interesting nooks and crannies. It's open 7 days a week, although you might call to find out when they open on Sundays.

It's at 150 W. Washington - a very new, weeks-old spot next to the Arena. I believe the full name is The Troll Pub Under the Bridge - it is sort of under the 2nd St. Bridge.

Another idea might be Eiderdown, here in Germantown on Goss Avenue. The appetizers and sandwiches are perfect bar food, and they have a fantastic beer and wine list (keep in mind they don't serve spirits). (Also, like every other bar or restaurant in Louisville on a Sunday, they won't be able to serve you alcohol until after 1 PM.)

I find the basement of the new BBC (by the Arena) to be cozy.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Terri,
I love the Sea Hag which is the pub in the basement of the village anchor. It is beautifully appointed, has an excellent staff, and terrific food. Its is small and cozy and has always been quiet when I was there. Never been there on a Sunday and they do a special brunch so I'm not sure if the atmosphere is different then. But I expect most of the business is upstairs in the restaurant.

Give it a try and if its too busy, the Anchorage Cafe is next door and Selena's at Willow Lake is just down the street. I also highly recommend Selena's for their food and service but I'm not sure it fits the cozy theme. I've also not yet been to the Anchorage Cafe but it is getting raves by others here.

Hope you have a good time. Cheers!
I'm a bitter drinker....I just prefer it that way
