Can you eat your way around the St James Art Fair?

by Dan Thomas » Fri Oct 05, 2007 1:25 am

There is a lot of stuff out there... A few years back I came across a booth that had the BEST SWEET TEA and crabcakes...For those of you who will be going out on Friday or Saturday...give the rest of us a clue as to where the good eats are(For Sale, not at someone's home where we probably won't be invited to.)

I used to live right in the middle of that perennial nightmare. I never found any food worthy of mention on this board. It sucked living there on that weekend.

Not on the premises of the art show but quite close by is the Hill Street Fish Fry at Hill and 1st. Very tasty fried seafood prepared while you wait. There's also Juanita's Burger Boy on the same block; just in case.

We didn't get our fair food dose since we missed the fair this year, so we'll be making the corn dog and italian sausage rounds... hopefully the kettle corn is better than the last batch I bought down there - it tasted almost like plain popcorn/

Our neighborhood association runs the Central Park West Cafe. Sit down dining with wine. It's at Fourth and Belgravia. I'll see if I can find a menu.

Great Food Tip for St James Visit!

by Sally M » Fri Oct 05, 2007 10:06 am

If it is still available, go to the little church at 6th and Hill (I think) and eat at their little lunch cafe they've set up for the weekend. It's a unique experience.

And you'll feel great that you have supported their efforts!

Sorry but I can't find the menu. Anyway, it's real food (as in not fried). Sit down outdoor cafe under a tent. People buss your tables. As I remember the menu sounded tasty, and was about $9. Please remember this is how we pay for the upkeep on our neighborhood, as Lou Metro does almost nothing.

I can remember the menu for today ... a little:

Mains:
BBQ pork sandwich on a hearty roll
Italian chicken sandwich on a roll
Grilled vegetable wrap <-- it was yummy!

Sides:
Loaded potato salad <-- also fantastic
Queso pasta salad
Orzo salad
Mango slaw?

A combo with one sandwich and one side was $10. They also had HUGE cookies that looked very tempting.

Very good food and a nice shady place to sit down, too.

Crabcakes are available on 3rd Street pretty much at the north end of block. Did not try them.

Saw the cafe that Leah mentioned. Looked good, but did not try it.

I would say the best bet was on 4th street in an area that is mostly a food court. Assumption Greek Orthodox Church was selling gyros and other similar food. Looked really good. Looked like a lot for low dollars.

In the same area was a Brandons bbq. Decent bbq.

It was so hot and muggy that food was not an option for us. Beer and water were the consumables of choice.

As usual, the artists were great and ended up spending twice as much as budgeted.

The gyros are sooooo good! I've been thinking about them all day. But, I will not be going this year, so eat one for me!

Gelatto at St. James

by Rick Adams » Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:28 am

I have heard that Gelatto by Gilberto is at the show. The pistachio & Italian wedding cake flavors that I've tried are excellent.

Beat The Heat...Go Early (At Least This Year)

by Ray W. » Sat Oct 06, 2007 5:32 am

Love those Crab Cake "Sliders"...It's always the first food booth I hit at the St. James Court Art Fair...Then It's off to get a slice of cheese pizza and an iced mocha...

I picked me up a nice Manta Ray wood carving this year...
